Thanks, at least now I know the problem. Now to find a solution.

I'll thumb through the thread when I get home to see if I missed adding anyone, and do some other thread maintenance.

edit: L36, SmartDoctor blows. Real awful, hated it with my Asus 5850.
I get a small stutter at checkpoint. That's fine. I also see other stuttering even if it's not a checkpoint. That should not happen. Hey i saw another review and bfbc2 max out was tested on the cold war level. The 6970 and GTX 570 produced the exact same amount of fps. at 1080p!

i want to point out that I was the first person circa this thread to deride the **** ASUS SMARTDOCTOR Windows 98 interface epic waste of fail. Kudos on your evaluation, btw

I have been running my 6970s at their max overdrive limit values very smoothly. That is to say, until I installed smartdoctor. You'll notice, if engaging it's fan controller, in ANY 3d application that there is a drawn out stutter every 5 seconds which renders everything not only unplayable and irritating but seriously enforces a dreaded sense of paranoia (swear I thought upping the voltage 1/10th of a volt had damaged all of my hardwares)because this stutter repeats itself in every single game & benchmark fired up . Elation fades to terror pretty quick.

Yeah, it took me about an hour to figure it out at most. But that hour was one of the most flatulent of my life.

Turns out, the hardware polling rate for the flimsy automatic fan implementation coincidencelessly polls in harmonious synchrony with the macrostutter in question. Turning it off provided Eyefinity high IQ fluidity to return.

But for how long, eh. For some reason, though, i now get crashes at identical clockspeeds used before the bios flash/smartdoctor debacle, with & without voltage bump.

Only benefit of smartdoctor is being able to enforce, essentially, unlimited overdrive limits re: core & memory clocks, For the few of us who can't manage unofficial overclocking in Afterburner, it's a helpful feature. It remains in place after uninstalling SD, too

Cool as that last bit may be, it's not enough to offset my terrible 2nd (and 2nd terrible) experience of the miserable & pathetic Asus software. Back to reliable XFX Pine Group.

Here are my Heaven results at 920/1370, curious to see other results at similar clocks..
EDIT: Turns out my FRAPS video record hotkey is F9, the same key for starting a benchmark in Heaven.. now I have over 100GB worth of recording of Heaven benchmark and an inaccurate run (locked FPS to 30..)! Will run again and post results soon.

Here they are:

Been reading the forums for a while and decided to buy me an upgrade. Went with a Sapphire 6950 to replace my aging 4890 . Should be a good upgrade, unlocking it is a bonus too.
