RAM timings?
Have you ran memtest?

Recently the GPU is always the first thing to crap out for me with bad/unstable memory.
Even if memtest passes, try loosening the timings.
Though i'm still trying to determine if it's a bad board, CPU or me just being an idiot.
I've been running defaults for a few days with the exception of mem at XMP and still get crashes and memtest errors when all 4 dimms are occupied.
No issues with just A1/B1 occupied.

Degradation? I noticed either tf2 is more stingy about unstableness, or my gfx card has degraded, and I think the the latter. I used to be good @ 930 and 1.212 volts, but now it needs 1.218 or greater. Temps never go over 65C.

I kinda thought that but that would be seriously irritating, I just got this one from RMA it seems not too long ago so I was really hoping it wasn't that lol

I had that message once or twice and I just ignored it. In the meantime I have changed my drivers a few times, and now I have noticed I never get the error any more (at least I haven't gotten it for many months now).

Almost forgot: 10 days until Diablo 3.

Kinda late to the game but im here! Sapphire 6950 1gb w/ unlocked shaders!

*ONE* GB? And you unlocked them? Please tell me how you did this; I am very interested in this possibility as I have an XFX 6950 1 GB model that doesn't appear to be factory OCed. biggrin.gif

I've owned an HD6950 for the last year and I really like it. I installed a Twin Turbo II and it runs silently. Then I saw a deal for a Lightning 6970 so I bought it the other day. Installed it and it runs fine, not as quiet or as cool as my 6950 but I wanted the 2gb of ram and the extra power did not hurt.

But I have a few questions about the temps. I'm running 2 monitors so it will not downclock all the way (sits idle at 500mhz on the core, my 6950 sat at 450mhz I think) but with the 6970 with almost no load, say just typing this post, it runs all the way up to 940mhz and is running hotter than I would like, is there some way to force a lower clock?

Also I run HWINFO64 to monitor almost everything in my computer. The 6970 has way more sensors than my 6950, one of these sensors is labeled GPUTS2 (Shader) and at idle right now it is running 90*C!!! The gpu temp is only at 49*C, can someone explain what exactly that temp is measuring, if it is accurate, and if I so can someone compare it to their temps (preferably someone with a 6970)

Here is a picture of hwinfo64 and a download link

You sure its a valid temp? Does it change under load? My mobo has a sensor that's always 40c regardless what I do. I use an IR thermometer as well ok its not massively accurate but its a nice way to see how hot the heatsink is.

Also question, I have an Asus 6950dc2 as stock it doesn't have a backplate. One is it worth getting one, an two can you fit them when the card had a natal bar down its side?

God I want that card lol but had no clue it ran that hot?

Found this quote in regards to clocks:
"Its not a Bug. All new GPU AMD ot Nvidia have 3 clock settings, Low 2D, High 2D, High 3D. The moment you connect 2 monitors the card goes to High 2D to keep up with the extra pixels. Its not really needed but AMD/Nvidia made the drivers in mind with low end cards also."

In regard to temps I have the 6950 TF3's less of card but certainly lower temps
I do find on my one unlocked 6950 vs my non-unlocked 6950 the shader runs 13 degrees higher (1408 vs 1536)

pic shows both cards at 950/1400 1.25v idle vs load using prime95 and kombuster for 10 min
d1aee74f_temps.jpeg

Hopefully someone here has a lighting to compare because searches do not come up with anyone that uses HWinfo64
the only suggestion I have is to close all other monitoring software like AB or GPUZ in case there is a conflict, then restart HWinfo headscratch.gif

edit: the thread starter Disturbed117 http://www.overclock.net/u/121820/disturbed117 has a lightning but I think he is folding at the moment thumb.gif maybe PM him after the chimpin challenge is over

I closed all the other monitoring software and then ran gpuz instead of hwinfo64, gpuz has 3 temps and GPU temp #3 is the shader temp I think. It is reporting the same ridiculous temps, I fired up furmark just for fun with it running and the shader hit almost 150*C before my computer locked up, driver did not crash and restart like it has on my my 6950, it literally made my computer unresponsive! Needless to say I just started an RMA with MSI, I'm acutally hoping they don't have a 6970 to send me and I get a 7870 instead smile.gif
