Cleaned it off the best I could with some alcohol wipes and applied a pea size drop of thermal paste before mounting it back down. Now my shader temps are sitting about 10*C higher than the core so probably in the 80's while gaming, I'm ok with that. I still have no idea why the hell it had so much thermal paste. It was comprised of 2 different colors so I think they added more thermal paste on top of the stock thermal paste without properly cleaning it when I sent it to them. I'm going to keep an eye out for a cheap antec 620 and add it on when I find one, I would like the temps to be around 60*C where my 6950 ran.
Thanks again for the advice. Moral of the story, forget rma's, just fix it yourself biggrin.gif

That is amazing. How can anyone in their right mind glob that much TIM on a GPU (or CPU)? Wow, if I was you I would email them again and show them that picture. I'm glad you posted it. I don't think I'll purchase any MSI products after seeing that. Good work.

I have everything stock right now and I just bought another MSI 6950 ref card from a member here(Sparkysomething) and was wondering if I crossfire both will it run okay? Or should I upgrade my CPU? I have overclocked it to 3.6 and ran very stable but as soon as I went up to 3.7 I would get crashes... so I decided to leave it stock.
So basically my steup is
XFX Radeon 6950 2GB
Asrock 890FX Deluxe 4 MB
AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz
I will be getting another 6950 card in maybe a week, should I upgrade my CPU...

I was using my HD6950 CFX with my HD6970 on an Intel Core 2 Quad overclocked to 3.3GHz for about four months. It worked perfectly and I had no problems until BF3 came out. Suddenly my CPU was bottlenecking. Since I was also planning on purchasing Skyrim, and since I paid so much for the video cards, I decided to upgrade my CPU/Mobo and memory. I'm using an Intel i5 2500K overclocked to 4.3GHz with 4G of 1600 RAM and everything seems great now. Nothing ever bottlenecks on the cards or on the CPU. I think the i5 2500K Sandy Bridge version is a good match for 2 x HD6970 cards (my 6950 is a reference card and has been flashed with the HD6970 Bios). The newer Ivy Bridge version should be more than adequate to drive 2 x HD6950 in cfx.

I'm sure you will find something similar. That most games will be smooth as butter, but once you start playing a newer game capable of heavy gpu and cpu loads you'll start seeing some bottlenecking,

If you have a second monitor, just leave After Burner and any CPU monitor (I use a Windows 7 gadget for cpu core temps) running on the 2nd desktop all the time. You'll see what's under the most stress easily while you're playing games.

Are you sure it even has anything to do with your video card? The ccc issue you are having is a driver issue, but the blue screen you're getting looks more like a memory fault to me. Your card is idling and not pulling much power, so it's pretty strange for it to cause this particular error message. Try swapping your DIMMs around, or removing them and trying another set (if you have one).

The other problem you're having is AMD Radeon HELL. I have just gone through the exact same thing, and I believe it's caused by daring to try and revert to an older driver. As I mentioned a few posts ago, I updated my driver this week and it caused the "green flashing background" problem in Skyrim menus and the local map. I tried to get back where I was, and every time I tried it would fail. To make a long story short, I found that the only way to get rid of the error you get during the ccc install is to use a good uninstaller after using the ccc uninstaller (I use driver sweeper). When it asks if you want to reboot, let it reboot and everything AMD will get wiped. The system will reinstall simple drivers on the reboot but if you reinstall the 12.6 beta the driver should work properly again. You may need to reboot (I was missing the Performance tab in ccc but it came back after a reboot). I think the problem will happen again if you try and revert to an older driver again. I have tried deleting the old drivers and using safe mode as well but the only way to get things running properly seems to be to use the newest ccc.

Now the cards are working properly, but I still have the Skyrim glitch. I had it before, but updating the driver fixed it. Now I can't go back to that version because every time I try, I get the same problem you're having.

After having read to the end of your thread, I see some others got the system working by installing the 12.1 drivers. I had the same Skyrim glitch using that driver when it came out. At the time, I think the 12.2 was in beta and it fixed the glitch so it was as far back as I tried to go. Perhaps using the 12.1 might have solved this, but frankly I'm tired of messing with it and Skyrim will just have to wait for another update.

Has your bluescreen problem gone away?

Had to RMA my Gigabyte reference 6950 and just got told they are shipping a replacement. I wonder if I'll get another reference card.
I doubt it. I would really hate to have my HD6950 go bad and need to be replaced. The non reference units can't be flashed to a 6970.

If you have not flashed your 6950 you may be better off with a non reference cooling solution though.

Okay so I bought a AMD FX 8120 CPU and my games are all running great with my XFX Radeon 6950 non refernce card. I have it overclocked to 4.1GHz with 1.45v but cant seem to pass beyond that... I see people have their 8120's up too almost 5ghz... also to note I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 and my temps dont go above 56c when gaming...

I flashed mine the day I got it and that was about 18 months ago. They sent me a 1GB card so I'm a bit disappointed. Haven't installed it yet
post #3548 of 3890
Did you accept a 1Gb card or did they just send it to you? If I had a 2Gb card there's no way I would ever accept a 1Gb card as an exchange. You paid for a 2Gb card you should get one back.

I emailed them but haven't heard back yet

UPDATE: Got an email saying that they are sure it's a 2GB card and then said "Also, we have checked the Gigabyte website and cannot find see that a 1GB version was even manufactured. Please see the link below…

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/list.aspx?s=43&p=52,53@53@53@53,62&v=2,8@6@1@2,15#2
"

They didn't look very hard because the card at the bottom is a 1GB card and I'm pretty sure that's the one they sent me. I can't find any with custom coolers that are 2GB cards.

UPDATE: I'm an idiot! I got home and looked at the card properly and it's actually a 6970. They gave me a free upgrade and I'm trying to argue that they ripped me off. I emailed them back and apologized profusely
