Yeah i also think the same. I was going to buy 7950 but its too damn expensive.. Anyway here's the model: http://hw-lab.com/unlock-radeon-hd-6950-2gb-tested.html
Hopefully it has the dual bios switch..

You can tell when it's working. You can see the rpms and temps of the cards, not to mention the loads. I tried Trixx twice, about six months or so apart. It would never work on the second card. I asked around in forums, and found other people having the same issue. Six months or so later I tried it again in case they had corrected the issue, but it still didn't work. That was about a year ago, so I don't know if it's been updated in the mean time, but afterburner solved the issue and I've been using it since.
That's a good choice. I have used the AS Thermal Adhesive, and it really works well. One thing to remember though is that it's like an epoxy, so don't count on getting it off once it's set.

We use the MX5186 to add heatsinks onto smt ICs in TVs and monitors when needed. Way better than thermal tape, but more permanent. Don't use too much, keep it away from chip pins. The MX5187 is supposed to be non capacitive, but the 5186 may be a bit better TIM.
Is that at stock clocks?

Well the clocks are stock to the flashed clocks.
One card flashed to 6970
one still at 6950 stock clocks

Should i down clock the memory on the flashed 6970?

i currently have two stock reference coolers on both my cards... i'd love nothing more than to put aftermarket coolers on them.. but i fear that the transplant might kill the card like i had in the past once.

its not the overclocking thats broken, its teh fan control that is

Doh doh.gif

I see. I don't use the fan controls so nevermind me. biggrin.gif

But you know, some ppl mix trixx and ab for the fan and osd. Personally I can't bench using AB because it causes too much vdroop, have to use trixx instead.

Currently using AB ... without any major issues that i can directly attribute to AB

AB cannot feed my quads enough voltage at 1330/1800. I have to use Trixx or it will crash. AB is laughable in this regard cuz it can only give my cards 1.2v ish when I have it set to 1.3v. With Trixx I'm rolling in the deep with 1.28v right where it's supposed to be. That said, I still use AB daily because I don't need that sort of voltage for a daily overclock and we must have our osd too.

Hey are your cards flashable? If so you should really think about using RBE + Racerx. Then you can just use AB for osd and fan control.

I would take one card out and try just one card at a time to start. First try it with the 6950 BIOS. Then increase the clock settings and see if your card works well. Then, flash to 6970 bios and test at stock 6970 settings. Remember, your 6950 cards have less shaders enabled. Some cards had bad extra shaders.

If you suspect bad shaders, look for a modded 6950 bios that just turns the extra shaders on, and retest your card again. If it works fine with the extra shaders enabled, you could just overclock it at that point up to 6970 clocks and not bother flashing it with a 6970 BIOS. If you get 6970 clocks from a 6950 without getting any artifacts on the screen or crashing during testing, consider yourself lucky.

Do those same tests for both cards. You can play around with the overclocking some more once you get both cards working with all the shaders and the clocks at 6970 values.

Generally, increase the clocks slightly and test them. If you get any artifacting or crashing, then increase your voltage until they go away. Repeat the sequence until you are at the maximum heat you want your cards to produce, or until they crash or create artifacts unless you back off the clocks.

You should look around and find what is the recommended maximum temp for your cards. I use MSI Afterburner to keep the temps under about 80c at full load (furmark). However, one of my cards (the 6970) has been over 100C without crashing (I accidentally had Afterburner off). Personally, I would try to keep it under 90c for sure.
