Anyone wondering about voltage support for Cayman should have a glance at the G3D AB forum.

I havent tried it any other way so I cannot verify if this was fixed but I am not having any problems whatsoever. If I am not mistaken, isn't it the AIB partner that determines which memory chips are on the board anyways even if it is reference? I am thinking that MSI is using the same for 6950 and 6970 because my memory is maxed atm and hasn't given me any issues. Core on the other hand, topped at 930, 950 gave me a freeze and havent tried 940.
All the current Cayman cards are true reference products. Including MSI. They all have the same components, bar Asus with the aluminium shroud. Exactly the same as AMD specified, down to the VRAM modules.

Last I checked, AB's unofficial overclocking feature is incompatible with Catalysts idle downclocking feature. To reach 6970 clocks on a 6950 bios, you have to enable unofficial overclocking.
Just because you haven't had any problems running 6970 VRAM timings on your 6950, doesn't mean it isn't potentially an issue. I'll reiterate, people have hosed their VRAM by flashing a 6970 bios. Admittedly, they appear to be the minority, but I imagine the same is the case with your monitor flickering problem. In essence, for every piece of anecdotal evidence, you can find a conflicting piece of anecdotal evidence, so try being constructive.

I get that monitor flickering problem if I turn my memory clock up too high. That and I often see my display going out of sync like crazy.

Yea memory gets pretty unstable. I used to get that with my 5850 if i took the memory clocks to 1500MHz+.

Good stuff..

The unlocked 6950 IMO makes every card in a higher price bracket look down right silly.
Crossfire doubles the silliness factor.

But when your talking a measly $80 more for a card that is guaranteed to do what your taking some [not many but some] risks to force another card to do.

That was the deciding factor for me.

Plus there was power consumption issues, the forced cards run the risk of getting to much load and not enough power for lack of 8 pin. There have even been a few complaints about artifacts, but you cant believe everything you read right? Plus they Bin the GPU's just like they would a CPU right? So just the fact you bough the cheaper card built on the exact same platform means your material was inferior to begin with.

It just makes more sense to spend the extra $80 doesn't it? Unless your scrapping pennies just to buy the thing but if that's the case you should be spending less time on your computer and more time at work or out of moms basement and making friends...[that last comment was not a personal attack on anyone here. I had forgot I started this reply with a quote from someone else. lol srry.]

Yea, 6950s are £50 cheaper than GTX 570s/6970s here and so far the majority of them unlock (TPU article statistics) but there are those that don't. I guess if yours doesn't you can always return it and hope for one that unlocks and is stable. I would still buy a 6970 if i could though but it depends. And thanks

You're mostly right there but most cards it seems are running fine and to some people $80 or £50 is still a lot and if they're on a budget then it could be a great deal for them (if it were to unlock). It may cause some problems if overclock but i never game overclocked
