Which brand has better performance?

Personally i own a 5970 OC version and it's the fastest card out right now and it's good.

Anyway let's down to business.

I'm a new member in this forum and i have not looked through most of the sub forums but i went to the heaven 2.1 benchmarks thread and causally looked thru it and noticed that almost all the top scorers were nvidia 480GTX owners and the top ATI guy in that thread owned 2 5970s in xfire mode way below a bunch of nvidia owners. I didn't really like the look of things nor would i make any conclusion just based on that thread alone after all the top scorers probably just owned nvidia cards but is it true that all along nvidia has somehow produced cards that perform better than ATI?

"The results are interesting to say the least. HardOCP found that while the Radeon HD 5970 delivered higher absolute framerates, the GeForce GTX 580 delivered a more consistent and better gaming experience". From Nvidia's website.

And that right there, isn't a lie at all. I've seen numerous people complain about microstutter and poor drivers with the HD 5970.

While it may be the fastest it's easily not the best.

I'm curious though is it true that over the years nvidia has mostly come up tops over ati?

They will this time, also. The GTX 595 is going to be something to remember, and the 6990 will compare to 2 GTX 570s in SLI while the 595 will be 2 580s in SLI, on one card.

Although, the 6990 WILL be cheaper than the 595. 595 will be ~$1100. 6990 will be around ~$800-$900

It is, except in specific benchmarks with tessellation enabled (read: Unigine HeavenV2.0). In game performance the 5970 blows everything away with brute force- the 5970 is a dual GPU card (2 graphics processors on 1 PCB). The GTX 580 is a single GPU card and isn't quite as fast, there's about a 10-20% loss to the 5970.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...80-review.html

But you also see that difference reflected in their pricing. The GTX 580 is around $500 retail, the 5970 is around $600.

Right now there is NO brand superiority. If you buy any card from either vendor at your specific budget with your specific needs in mind, you will be happy. The differences in performance are reflected in the price almost perfectly.

If it is it would be primarily due to NVIDIA's pretty much rock solid drivers that give them the edge over the ATI/AMD offerings... I would be willing to bet if that the ATI/AMD drivers were to be as solid as Nvidia's that the tables would turn.

$500.00 5970- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-887-_-Product

$550.00 GTX 580 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-186-_-Product

The 5970 DOES beat the GTX 580, but it also has issues like microstutter.

Turn on extreme tesselation on heaven.

GTX 580 will bring the 5970 to it's knees.

GTX 580 > 5970.

Dual gpu card's have always had problem's.

i hated my GTX 295's,

my 6870's are more my style and at 20$ cheaper then can beat a single GTX 580 ( except no tesselation and PhysX. but i dont care about either of those.

5970 is the fastest but 580 offers a much better gaming experience due to better minimum fps. Also Nvidia cards are still king of tessellation so 480, 570 and 580 will beat anything ATI offers.
