BSOD in OS boot after OC

I keep reading how easy it is to get a 965 up to 4.0ghz so i thought i'd try it since i intended on overclocking at some point anyways. i moved my cpu multiplier to x17 so that my mhz on the core clock came out to 4000. i left the fsb ratio on auto as well as the voltage for the ram and the cpu. the system looked stable at first because i had video my bios worked and my boot loader for my OSs worked. then came windows 7 boot. the 4 colors swirled together and i was excited. then came our old friend the BSOD. after 3 tries i reset the multiplier in bios to stock (11.5) and it booted windows fine. can anyone tell me what went wrong?

For 4 Ghz, you need more voltage. Stock volts at 4.0 just isn't gonna happen....

Don't run voltages on auto dude. Try 1.45 vcore an a 20x multi will give you 4ghz if you leave your reference clock at 200. Also set your ram to 1333 till you get the cpu stable then you can work on the ram.

1.45v? ok ill try that. how do i calculate required voltage? there is a second multiplier in the CPU. its for the hypertransit system but im not too fimilar with the hypertransit architecture. to i need to change that as well? the current multiplier sets it to 2000mhz

That would be your CPU/NB speed leave that @ 2000 for the moment. Leave you HT at 2000 as well there is no benefit in overclocking that it can just cause instability.

As others have said, you will almost definitely need to increase your core voltage (vCore) for the overclocking you're doing. I doubt leaving the voltage set to Auto will supply enough to your CPU. Other frequencies (HTT/bus, RAM, etc) will probably be OK if you're running them at stock. Personally, I don't like leaving a frequency on Auto even if it's overclocked just a little bit, because I like to know for certain what voltage is being run through said component.

to increase my RAM to 1600 (which is supported) i could increase the ratio of the FSB but 1 to 1 is the most efficient ratio. how else can i get a faster speed our of my ram? will increasing voltage alone in BIOS do it?

AMD can be a bit picky about running ram at 1600 thats why I would leave it at 1333 for the moment. To get my ram to run @ 1600 I had to raise my reference clock an multi if I just set it to 1600 it refused to boot.
