Is this next purchase worth its weight in gold?

Thought I would come here for some sound advice on my next GPU purchase.

As you can see from my profile, I have a GTX295 and use a GTX260 OC edition for Physix. I skipped the previous generation which was the 4xx range due to performance not really benefiting me over my current setup with the GTX295. I don't use 3dVision at the moment, but do play FPS shooters and games that push the computer.

Would you guys say there is much performance boost with a GTX580 over a GTX295 and if so, is it worth the cash?

Thanks

There will be an increase...it depends on what kind of money you are gonna sell ur 295 for if at all. A 295 was trivially below a 480 and the 580 is a good step above the 480 (obviously) but is it a 500$ step? I don't personally think so but that's up for your own interpretation. I haven't seen bench's for it personally...but how do the 295's do in quad-sli? that would be another more affordable option and that would be a nice upgrade. However, I have NOTHING bad to say about the 580's they are amazing cards.

1. OP...nice DP.
2. I'd say consider a 2nd 295...not sure how well quad-sli scales, but you'd save yourself $$$.
3. I stepped up from SLI 460s, so my opinions really are moot...pity you cant quadfire 460s.

I have ever heard that the GTX295 doesn't benefit hugely from quad Sli. When is the next greatest thing from NVIDIA due?

if you're not looking to spend so much (580) then a 570 would also be a HUGE improvement over your 295

I would prefer to hit the top card if it's worth it, I haven't experienced DX11 either so not to sure if the visuals in gaming will stand out much. IS the GTX580 going to be around for 6mths or so, or have Nvidia got plans to replace it with something else soon - meant replace being, a higher end card?

AMD will release the HD7000 series around Fall 2011, so NVIDIA will have to respond either before that (Summer) or immediately after (Winter) with the GeForce 600 series.

From what I have read the 570 is about the same performance as the 480, but with greater power efficiency and lower temperatures. The 480 was a slim improvement over the 295 at stock speeds.

The main benefits you will get from going from a 295 to a 580 are increased stability, no micro-stuttering, DX11, and lower power consumption and heat. The card also makes a lot less noise.

For any game that uses multiple GPUs, the frame rates will be close. However, in games that only recognize one GPU, the difference between an under-clocked GTX 275 (half of a GTX 295) and a GTX 580 will be noticeable.

Metro 2033 was a huge problem with my system, I also struggle to play BC2 - Vietnam with HBAO enabled on max detail. My LCD is a 28", so I game at 1920x1200.
