GTAIV Horrible FPS on HD4870

Thread Starter
I have a little (or pretty big) problem. I recently upgraded my GPU from a (underclocked) 9800GT Eco to a HD4870 OC. I reinstalled Windows 7 Home Basic, fully updated it, downloaded the latest drivers from ATI, updated DX, etc etc.

I installed GTAIV and applied the patch. But when ingame, with everything set even on low, I only get 25FPS... I get 25FPS with everything set to high as well. It just kinda lags around, and I'm sure its something to do with the GPU becuase with my 9800GT, which was half the power, was getting a good 35fps+. There's also a bunch of problems with shaddows in the game. They keep flickering, or showing criss-cross images.

I'm also having problems with Black Ops, but tbh, I won't complain about that, becuase everyone is.

Any ideas?

.

Not saying you're wrong, but pretty much _everyone_ that ever played GTA IV on a computer will agree that a quad core 'fixed' the game for them. It sure fixed mine.

I was using a very similar card. 5770. Changing CPU (from an E6420 conroe at 3.2ghz) to an i5 (at stock 2.94ish with turbo) I went from unplayable at ~30 fps, to silky smooth in the low 50s.

I had the exact same problem with shadows, and it never went away. Til I got the 460 that is.

Nah. Definitly NOT the CPU. It was working fine with a 9800GT Eco, medium settings, 35fps+. Slapping in a card thats double the power, and dropping frames is definitly a GPU issue. (I was going to say it was faulty, but it plays all the other games flawlessly.)

Well, I've maxed out San Andreas and Call of Duty 2, if that makes a difference. (pun intended.)

Bump.

Use medium textures.

From my own experience nvidia cards tend to do better in GTAIV. Try using older drivers, i use to use 10.4a on GTA4 and it worked fine. Also try turning on & off vysnc and see if that helps, it's know to cause issues for some people, and clip capture also.
