6870 vs 6950?

Thread Starter
It seems I am pretty much guaranteed to get an HD 6870 for Christmas, probably the ASUS reference card. I realized for $40 I could get a 6950, which I would gladly pay myself since I didn't even expect to get a 6870. I was wondering first of all if there is a return shipping fee and a restocking fee? If there is it probably wouldn't be worth it because it could be near a $100 extra. Second, is the 6950 even much better than a 6870? Thank you!

If you can do it for $40, get the 6950, looks to be a great card.

Maybe you can slip an envelope with the money and little unsigned note saying "Can a 6870 turn into a 6950? Lets find out" and slipping it to the person who is going to get you the 6870.

The best way all around, unless you think it would offend the person. Make sure to be really greatful in the note, like "Wow, never thought I would get a 6870, now it can be a 6950!" or something.

Because shipping, restock fees, etc. will eat a lot of your time and money.

The box is already under the tree. That's why i was wondering about the restocking and shipping fees.

I was playing around with the 6870 for about a week before I swapped it for the 6950, few things I've noticed is the 6950 seems to scale better, noticeable FPS on all games specially DX11 games like Alien VS Predator.

As long as it is still new and sealed in the box, Newegg will wave the shipping and restocking fees. I actually did this with some RAM that I bought around a month ago. I spoke with their online support and they took care of it for me so it really depends on where you bought it from. If it's opened/used, they will force you to pay the return shipping costs and normally a 15% Restocking Fee. On a $250 GPU, that's nearly $40 Restocking + $10 or so to Ship it. That' means you will have to pay $90 extra for the 6950 instead of $40. wink.gif

Edit: And honestly, if you're going to pay $300 for a 6950, I would recommend paying $300 and buying 2x 6850's to Crossfire, instead. They will perform much better than a 6950 solo.

It's from Newegg, so maybe I'll talk to my stepdad later tonight about it, after he's had some rum with his friend wink.gif

Also, which one? I like the Sapphire but none of the cards have reviews

ASUS is my favorite GPU company and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Their cards are normally the best overclockers and they always have really nice cooling systems as well plus excellent customer service. Aside from ASUS on ATI Cards, Gigabyte, Sapphire, and MSI are great companies also.

Well I will eat potatoes, rice/barley, carrots, and not much else...

So that I can get a 6950, without enriching the the international banksters...

Then in about 3 months, I will get another 6950, and another 2x2GB DDR3 1600 CL7
