Phenom 965 Stock Cooler, surprised....

Thread Starter
I am surprised at the performance of the stock cooler for my 965.
Idling right now at 27-30c but with only a 4 multiplier, 800Mhz. Idles around
35-38c with a 17 multiplier, 3.4Ghz. Under load, playing Blops, 47-49c. My ambient temps are around 20-22c. I havent tried Prime or any similar progys and I dont plan to. As long as it will run a game ok, I can finally play Blops smile.gif, I am happy.

I was considering changing the cooler but I may not now. From what Ive read here and other places, my load temp is just fine. The reason I was surprised at the temps was due to the terrible surface the cooler has. It looks like someone took it to a course grinding wheel to try to smooth it out. I am guessing lapping it would improve it. I tinted both the cooler and cpu, with AS5, before applying more to the cpu and mounting the cooler.

Out of curiosity, what coolers are out there that use the AMD stock bracket without a backplate? It is not always easy to see, on newegg, if coolers require back plate. I dont really want to tear this apart to put on a cooler. I will if I have to but hoping for a easier swap.

While Im here, what is the setting in the bios to turn off the multiplier auto adjusting?

I didnt realize you should add 10-12c to the temps you see in core temp. This true?
If so I am pushing 60c under load. I am getting close to being too hot correct?

Thanks
Hop

The Phenom's Stock Coolers are indeed impressive. hehe I am very pleased with mine.

Can't say the same about Intel's, however. tongue.gif lol

My 955's stock heatsinks runs pretty cool. They are all solid thin finned 4 heatpipe designs with a solid copper bases. My cpu peaks at 60c even after 1 solid hour of OCCT stress
testing.

The problem is that the tiny 70mm fan is loud like a jet engine at peak load, and my 955's cooler has the fan sunk into a 70mm wide slot in the middle of the heatsink, making it difficult to mod for a different fan. I've seen photos of other phenom coolers with the fan placed above a level topped heatsink instead. Unfortunately I didn't get one of those. Are there any idea if those different designs are consistent with specific cpu models?

They are quite good, I ran mine for a few months before I decided to overclock to 3.8Ghz and it couldn't handle it so had to swap it out for this 212+ which dropped temps by 12C biggrin.gif
