Indecisive after buying 6950 CF

Hi guys, I just ordered a pair of XFX 6950 for my rig, I game at 2560 x 1600 so I can definitely benefit from the crossfire gains. Thing is after my purchase I was browsing overclock.net and came across a GTX 560 thread, saying it will come out on Jan 20th and perform better than the 6950 while costing cheaper!

Should I just cancel my order now and wait until January? Any opinions is greatly appreciated as I've been so indecisive with choosing a new setup as of late

Pros of 6950s:
- 2gb memory for 30" gaming
- improved scaling vs 5000s series (90-100% in most reviews)
- minimum frame rates greatly improved (had 5970 and it will collapse running crysis warhead at 25x16, the 6950CF's minimum is 44fps according to anandtech)

Cons (vs gtx 560 sli)
- potentially worst driver support vs nvidia
- pricing (I read gtx 560 will be $250?)
- higher TDP (250W vs gtx 560's 180W)

So what should I do? I guess I can use my 8800gt backup for now while I wait an extra month, or should I just settle (improper use of the word I know) with a pair of 6950s? Thanks a lot for the help

Stay with the 6950's man. They can only get better with age (improved drivers). The 560 will perform around the same as the 6950 anyways so just keep what you have and enjoy them! Overclock them for maximum ownage.

I would stick with the 6950s, as they WILL have more ram and your gaming at a high res it will get used. Hell crysis uses 1011mb at 1920x1080 with very high settings and x8AA. Drivers are fine for AMD, I have yet to have an issues that wasnt of my own doing. I dont really see TDP as being a con, as long as you have enough power to run them who cares really. I dont really care if my cards get hot, as long as they stay within the safe zone thats all that matters. I doubt the 560s will be better than the 6950s, the 6950s beat the 570s in crossfire vs sli benchs that Ive seen. Stick with the 6950s Im sure they will do you some good.

Well for me, there are no Nvidia 890gx equivalent MB, because they don't have SATA 3 or USB3, so I will get a 890gx MB, and then 1 6950, and then about 2-3months later, another 6950 and another 2x2GB DDR3 1600 CL7

I will get just 1 24" 1920x1080 monitor

The 560 is expected to have 1gb ram, for your resolution you've already made the right choice.

I'm not saying this because i just dropped a pair of 6870's for a 570 but my experience with a WIDE array of ATI cards in Crossfire....

Ati/Amd couldn't make a decent crossfire driver TO SAVE ITS LIFE. With 10.12's and BC2 the game wouldn't run in crossfire. I would get 10fps and have to exit to disable Xfire.

Cancel and order a pair of these.

Thats a little funny that you say that since I just bought BC2 and it runs fine with my 6870s. PEBKAC error maybe? Also I am running 10.12.

return one and if you need it, add another, or if you aren't happy you can sell it.

this is the tech game, there is always something better and newer, lower voltage, higher overclockability, better drivers etc etc in the near future

honestly, just keep it and game away, you will be smiling from ear to ear...guaranteed

I do @ 2560x1600...and I do even more when @ 3600x1600

thanks for the input guys,

coming from a 5970 I know ati drivers can be a pain in the ass. Like for example I still remember F1 2010 and Dead Rising 2 will not use crossfire properly and for weeks I've been stuck running sub 30fps in both games. Eventually they were fixed and ran great (had to change Dead Rising 2.exe to dirt2.exe to get xfire to work lol)

But overall I think both sides have its problem, just that sli/xfire definitely is more problematic.

I think I will go with sticking to 6950s if the review on anantech is to be trusted. I really just want great scaling, good bang for buck and future proofing for the next year or so and the 6950s seem to be the answer. It ties the gtx 570s in most benchmarks, so i can't imagine gtx 560s will perform better. I'll stick with the red team this round and hope for the best!

that's why I didn't go CF w/ the 5850, as I had a 5970 as well...I will add a 2nd 6970 if I AMD continues to have better CF support
