Radeon 5970 vs 6970

Thread Starter
So here's the sitch: I can get 6970s in crossfire (which is about 30% better performance than what I have now from what I have now) or add a second 5970...

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Get two 6970's.

Two 5970s is only good for benching, can be problematic with gaming.

I would get a 5870 to put in tri fire or wait till the 7000 series. Quadfire is negligable compared to trifire a lot of the time, so tri-fire is the sweet spot assuming you don't run into driver issues. I see no amazing performance change in the 6000 series to be completely truthful.

The thing is, I have seen a lot of game lately that like a framebuffer larger than 1GB. I am thinking the 2 6970s will be better in the long run as with 2 5970s I still only have a 1GB framebuffer per GPU versus 2GB for each slightly slower 6970... and the scaling on them is amazing I hear. I don't have an problems gaming with the 1 5970, it's great, but I am looking at future games and the benefit of better scaling/larger framebuffer.

Also, I plan on using them with 3 monitors for eyefinity so that 2GB is mighty nice looking.

I would get another 5870 instead. tri-fire scaling is a lot better than quad fire settings and that setup will destroy a 6970CF.

I have a 5970 just sitting on my desk.

I bought my GTX 570s yesterday after thinking what I should buy. I could have bought another 5970 for cheaper, but the horsepower per frame buffer ratio didn't sit well with me.

That's what I am thinking now. Unless I can get like the 4GB eyefinity edition it would be better to get a 2GB card.

The basic truth is Quadfire is crap for gaming. The only reason you need anything more than a 5970 is for DX12 Games and 5970 is not designed to be spectacular in DX12. If you are upgrading go with 6970CFX and 470SLI(This for single monitor).
