The basic truth is Quadfire is crap for gaming. The only reason you need anything more than a 5970 is for DX12 Games and 5970 is not designed to be spectacular in DX12. If you are upgrading go with 6970CFX and 470SLI(This for single monitor).

Going for 3 monitors... 1920x1080x3

On the contrary, one 5970 vs Trifire is a significant difference when it comes to minimum FPS.

I play Crysis (yes, as a game, not a benchmark) since it pretty much justifies my purchases. And I expect to be playing Crysis 2 when it launches as well. And honestly, the feeling of dropping from 90fps to 40fps is really noticeable...and not in a good way.

I also see that I'm GPU limited in such situations. A friend of mine has a similar rig, except with three 5870's. He gets ~60fps minimum, and it feels that much smoother.

So yes, it's really a subjective matter of weighing whether shelling out for another card is justified by a much better minimum/average FPS. To me, it is. But hey, this is OCN.

OP I just swapped out my 5970 for two 6970s in CF.

My Vantage benchmarks are below; also to note, tessellation performance has been improved a lot. I can now play Metro2033 maxed with tessellation on, where as with the 5970 wit was a struggle.

Vantage Benchmarks:

5970

GPU-24,321
CPU-13,275

This is helpful. I am getting about 25k with my 5970 in vantage. The thing is, 2 6970s are only marginally better. I can't really say whether it would be worth the switch till I can buy 2 and try playing with them. I don't care much for benchmark scores, more playability.

Looking at this though, the crossfire scaling is only like 30%.... Which driver version is this with?

I think it's more a matter of efficiency.
