Old computer. What do

Thread Starter
Hey guys!

Well, today my uncle visited and gave me his old PC which had 'broken' and he thought I could make something of it. I'm flattered.

I diagnosed the problem so far as a dead disk drive and after installing Windows 7 I'll be able to see if that's all that is 'broken'.

Anyway, the specs that I know so far are:
ASUS K8V-MX motherboard
AMD 3000+ CPU
Apacer PC3200 CL3 2x512MB RAM
And some form of aftermarket cooler with a Cooler Master Silence fan on it.

So, seeing as I'm not familiar with technology of that generation , I was wondering what I should do with this PC? Is it worth trying to get some new parts for it and juice its performance or should I just get it on its feet and sell it? Or any other possibilities?!

Feel free to use your imagination
Thanks!

Recycle it? Clean it off, give it to goodwill for a tax credit?

When you said dead disk drive, do you mean the hard drive is dead?
You could likely find an IDE here from someone (hey, PM me and I'll send you one for just shipping if you're not picky).

At that point, you could run an old Fold@Home program on it.
Media server was also mentioned.

What is media server?
Also, disk drive meant optical drive.

Defiantly to fold... but is that thing even gonna finish a work unit by the deadline? I fold with my P4 BTW.

Or do a dice run (Dry Ice Run) and burn it.

I say rebuild it very cheaply like.
Athlon II X2 250(3.0ghz), mini-atx mobo, DVD burner and some DDR2 memory and call is good.

Donate it?
Just a thought if you absolutely cannot find any use to it. Pass it on to a family member. Even a 3000+ is enough for my web browsing tasks at internet cafes here (actually it's rather fast, snappier than the Pentium D systems directly beside it) and 1GB RAM is fine.

Pull the CPU cooler off while it's running and watch the processor explode and then put the video on YouTube. There really isn't much you can do with old slow technology. Or donate it. Or sell it for 10 bucks on Craigslist.
