Crashing Help

Thread Starter
I dont know where else to put this since OCN doesnt have a general help forum...

Anyway heres my problem... In my sig build below... Recently I have been experiencing crashes while gaming... Full computer crashes that result in a reset or weird coloured screen that requires a reset to get anywhere...

So heres what I have done:

Furmark - For ages... Around an hour... The max temp my card got to was 91 which yes I know is high (but the fan was only on 30% usually I run it higher) but 91 is still well below the max safe temp for the card.

Memory Diagonistic - Have done it twice... No errors at all.

Prime95 - Ran for 4 hours again no problems, no resets nothing... CPU never got above 45 degrees... Which is well below the max safe temp...

So any ideas on what could be causing these crashes?

note that Gray Screen Of Death in not always gray But yeah, GPU issue in any way. Try reverting all OC just for the sake of experiment and see if it helps. What drivers are you using?

EDIT: And for those temps- try replacing the thermal paste. I was reserved to that too, but it lowered my temps from 90+ to 75-80 load, and I attached an extra fan to get them to 65. Results in +100 3DMarks and more stable OC. Mfs put a lot of paste on those cards, my chip was swimming in it.

Im not running any OC... The card is also a 4890 so not a 5xxx series...

I havent updated my graphics drivers in awhile... Ill try that and see If I get any improvement...

I read the thread and I think its saying stuff about OC... I have everything not OC in my system as I really havent found the need yet, however my 4890 is a factory OC one (Hence the turbo)

Cheers

Factory OC is not a problem However the crash issue (GSOD or whatever called) can appear on all cards between HD2xxx and HD5xxx (HD6xxx haven't yet been reported to have such issues). I had it on HD2600 Pro, I had it on my current HD4870 too. The first time it was due to RAM running on too tight timings, the second- due to overheating (90+C load). 4890 is another chip, so i don't know. Do the driver update, could be a solution If not- I'd say overheating

When I run my card at 40% fan which is what I do when i run games... On furmark is didnt get above 75 degrees... Is that still too hot? Though surely if its crashing at these temps theres something wrong with it since the max temp I found was 120 ish... Too bad the card is over a year old now lol.

Ill try the drivers tonight and see if I get any improvement... but failing that whats the next step?

120 is a melting temp. That's not max allowable, that's physical max 75 is fine, or at least was fine for me and my R770. You're running R790, i think, but temps should be about the same. 75 is fine. Does it crash at that temp?

EDIT: My 4870 crashes the system at 95-100C

Well I dont know... I put it on 40% fan when I game... And Ive only have it crash during gaming... Under furmark at 40% it doesnt get over 75 degrees... So I dont see how gaming could make it go over 75 degrees if furmark cant...

It didnt crash even at 91 degrees in furmark... Nor 4 hours or so of Prime... Its just while gaming its odd... Since surely prime and furmark are more intesive than gaming...

Oh, it can. Vantage, Furmark and ATITool didn't get mine above 85-90, Crysis got it to 100+

Lol how does that make sense... Haha whats the point of the programs if they cant stress it out lol...

Ok Ill see if I can somehow measure the temps while I game... And see how hot it gets... Any ideas on a program that can do that?
