Ubuntu 10.10 Help [New Issue]

Thread Starter
So I installed 10.10 on an old laptop that I just received, and I decided to slim down the OS from software I don't need/use. I made sure to not remove anything important, but I guess I did. There is no longer a window manager (I think), because what windows are open do not appear on the bar that it should, or at all for that matter.
What I do?

Here is the new problem:
When I close the laptop or it just goes to sleep, it will not turn back on. I have to hold the power button and restart it. What's up with that?

Also, I really like the background I'm using, and I want it for my main computer. Where can I find the stock Ubuntu backgrounds?

Reinstall and try again? If it's a fresh install you shouldn't have too much invested into the install.

This is an old drive. It would take probably 40 minutes for it to be finished installing. My internet isn't anywhere near fast, so for it to be fully updated like it is now would take 1-2 hours. So that's almost 3 hours, when I'm fairly certain I can just download something from the software center.
If this machine was newer, I would. Thanks for the reply, though.

if you are sure which software you removed and you shoudlnt have, then just open the repository prog (kpackagekit in KDE, dunno what in gnome) and reinstall that software ... otherwise id suggest you reinstall all the software you uninstalled ...

ubuntu doesnt really come bloated so why the need to prune it?

Now I just need to find that. Hm...

Old computer. Small harddrive. I also like to slim down my OS just because I don't like wasting space with stuff I don't use, you know?

ok, i dont really use gnome but i think this simple solution should work ... delete your current panel/bar ... right click and then delete. then just add a new one ...

lol wut? Ubuntu comes horribly bloated from a linux standpoint. And they link everything to everything else. Want to remove evolution mail? Go right ahead! But then you can't add people to your buddy list in Empathy.

Agreed, I uninstall all the bloatware like that crap evolution mail and empathy.
All the little games I don't want, and many other unwanted programs.

Thank God I used Kubuntu. Much fewer problems on the cross integration of programs. I just don't get why everyone thinks/thought Gnome was less resource intensive because I ran both and KDE was only at most using a 100MBs more.

OP: If you got rid of the DE (window manager if you will) I don't think you'd be seeing much at all since it's the GUI environment if I understand correctly. Glad to see you got the panel thing though back under control. I remember when I first tried out Ubuntu and somehow had both panels linked (don't ask, me and default Ubuntu are not on talking terms). Went to the second and poof, both were gone. Freaked me out.
