would PHENOM II X4 955 work?

the psu i hadnt tought that much about, im glad that you pointed that out
thinking about CORSAIR HX 650W
The RAID card I mentioned is a Dell PERC 6/i. If you go with that one, make sure to get a Battery Backup Unit (BBU) and cable with the card--it allows for saving the memory cache in case of power failure or whatnot. I found mine on Ebay for $150 USD.

If you are going to do a lot of encoding, then yes, the X4 955 would be a good choice, and the 650HX would be a better choice than Cheiftek for a server.

Also, don't forget an OS drive--RAID will be good for storing files, but it would be good to consider keeping Linux and all of the encoding work on a separate drive. 250GB or 320GB would be more than enough (Samsung also sells a 320GB F4 that is fast )

Even a 4 GB CF card would be enough for a Linux setup.
That's what's in my fileserver and Ubuntu 10.10.
Only using something like 65% utilization.

I'd swap the motherboard for a 7-series chipset - they use 15W or so less power.

And I'd also recommend a RAID1 array (onboard is fine) for your OS - either 320GB F4s or a couple of laptop drives for lower power would be ideal.

I would also question the need for RAID. Unless you need fast reads for local work (ie not over the network) then there is no real point. Duplication as offered by WHS or Amahi would be more reliable for similar money.

And if you need RAID, then running Linux software RAID will be cheaper and just as fast and reliable. A RAID card isn't ideal for many home users, and if you are using Linux anyway you have a good alternative anyway.

I notice you have a 5770 in the build, but I don't know why.

if it's a server, why does it need a gaming gpu?

I have a 9800gx2 in my server for encoding purposes, but that's because nvidia cards have cuda and a variety of software available for them, while ati cards do not have the same support.

also, a server with only 2GB of ram?
