It's been said but with raid 5 you can save money by buying 3 HDDs now then add more later
This.
It will take you AGES to fill up that space, depending more or less what you do.
It would be more cost advantageous to buy drives as you go.
You can easily add drives to the array and expand your partition at a later date.

My 4x 750 GB still isn't full from March..

The ram will not be a problem any way since i have quite a few DDR3 laying around

I will do as suggested with the hard drives, will buy 3-4 now and will get the rest later when i get to the point were adding more will be needed.
A question tough, with the ability to expand the volume to btw 16-24TB raw space depending on 2TB-3TB drives. Would it be better to go for a RAID6 solution instead of RAID5?

and can you expand the raid volume without any major problems with RAID5-RAID6?

Depends how paranoid you are..
RAID 6 will tolerate 2 drive failures, but you will lose 2 drives worth of space.
There's also a little more performance hit on writes since there is extra parity involved.
If I were doing something with 10+ drives I might consider RAID 6 instead..

But yes, when you add a new drive to the array it may take an hour or two for the controller to expand data+parity to the new drive. Afterwards you will have to expand your partition. No major problems with expansion itself, though.

going for the Corsair VX450W PSU

Well only reason i ask is the talk i have heard about problems while rebuilding raid5 with more drives failing during the process.

An hour or two? : With 250GB drives maybe, but any bigger and you're talking far, far longer.

This. Adding 2TB drives to an array can take several days to complete...

Adding a 750 GB to my 4x array only took ~2.5 hours or so..
