Debian - Video

Thread Starter
I just got debian installed with the ATI fglrx driver. I'm getting a black border around the screen that is plugged into the HDMI port. I have one plugged into DVI and that one is fine.

I'd rather not use the proprietary drivers with CCC because I had that installed first and had a lot more problems.

Is there another way to fix this? I also need to have my monitors in dual mode where I can use them individually instead of mirrored.

Thanks
Speedy

Fglrx *is* the proprietary driver. "Radeon" is the open source driver, so I take it this is what you're using. If so, play around with xrandr for monitor/display configuration. Keep in mind that with the radeon driver you won't get much in the way of 3D support for that card in your sig. (compared to fglrx).

Ok, I am using the proprietary driver, just not CCC.

I'm using two monitors and need them to be an extended desktop, not mirrors of each other. I have the main one plugged into the HDMI port (this one has the black border) and the second one plugged into a DVI port.

Nothing I've tried in xorg.conf has worked, I either get mirrored screens with errors in the log file: Display Infrastructure Failed and PreInit failed, or it hangs when X starts and requires a reboot.

If you're using fglrx, you need to use the CCC for configuration; the driver uses its own config. file (I forgot its name but it's located in /etc/ati) and only uses xorg.conf to specify the module. However, if you run aticonfig it should let you change display and general driver settings (run it from a terminal and it will list all available options). The driver should also be compatible with standard xrandr, so you can still try it.
For the underscan issue with the HDMI display you can do:

Code:
xrandr --output <output> --set underscan off
Mind you, this is using xrandr and the radeon driver, so I don't know how fglrx will react to that; but since fglrx is supposed to work with xrandr, I don't see why it should cause problems.

Okay, thanks for the help. I had problems with CCC but that may have been due to me messing up. That and wine kept crashing the system.
