New Build i7 vs Sandybridge

Thread Starter
Ok so I'm planning for a new build, but, should I get an i7-950 for $200 off Microcenter or wait however long for SB without having a rig to play on? Will Sandybridge arrive at the beginning of January.

I vote I7 950, prices are good and performance will stand up for a while. But the new cpu's OC like crazy. The MBs are not compatable either. So wait or not wait. Money is right for I7.

One question, do you have enough patience for Ivy Bridge? It will probably perform 2x better than Sandy Bridge because it goes from minimum 2 cores maximum 8 cores to minimum 4 cores and maximum 16 cores. 16 cores!!! It'll be out in the summer. For this though I'd get the 950 once sandy bridge is out. The price will probably drop pretty low.

Beginning of January or end of January for SB?

Ha I'm in the same boat, actually have the 950 from micro center sitting in my desk unopened. Mobo on the way. I've gone back and forth.

I decided that the 2600k with tax and everything for me will be close to $400. Thats what I payed for this cpu and board. I don't really want to skimp down to the 2500k as it looks like the 950 will hang with it.

I think I will build this and then see what intel offers with socket 2011 later this year.

The date is like january 9th I believe. I called micro center they arem't sure when they will get them. I wonder if they will sell them at a discount right away?

i say sandy bridge considering that its coming out in 2 weeks. the reviews on the i7 2600k have been really good. clock for clock its faster, and hitting 5ghz on air seems to be not that hard. 2 weeks bro, just have some nice family time and it'l pass

Yeah...I'm sure those 16 cores will cost right at the price point he's discussing in this thread.

Just about nothing needs 16 threads/cores.

"Nothing" excluding Folding, and Maya...
