Weird Hard drive sector problem

Hi. My friend tried some adventure trying to create a partition(not windows partition) using quota management in windows xp and ended messing things up such that windows is no longer bootable. Now, When he tries to reinstall windows xp using cd, the setup function doesn't work. The message "setup is inspecting your hardware configuration" comes and the screen becomes blank, no change. He tried it using another friend's disc, but same result. When booted using fedora live cd, it showed that the hard drive has bad sectors and the message "smart has reported that the hard drive is failing" popped up. But except the partition which he messed up, he was able to copy data from all other partitions to an external hard drive, even from the windows partition. The messed up partition was behaving like an empty partition with only 16kb occupied space. What's happened to his hard drive? Is it a hardware failure? How to correct this problem? Thanks in advance...

sounds like he didn't mess anything up so to speak, it just so happened to start dieing when he started messing with it. Sounds like it is time for a new hard drive.

Thanks for the reply. He erased the entire drive using sea tools for dos and reinstalled windows (windows disc booted successfully after erasing). When he checked for sector errors on each partition using windows built in error checking tool, windows just showed 'scan complete', it didn't show any error. But fedora is still showing that the disk has got sector problems. Which report is to be believed? Is there any other tool that is more reliable? If so, please suggest one.

well considering everybody uses 3rd party software when it comes to windows and scanning or maintenance for a computer, i would trust the linux tool first, since it is 3rd party and isn't trying to get your money.

Sorry for the late response, he came to know that the 'hard drive is failing' message in linux is actually a bug. He tested it with 'HDD health' application and found that the health is 74%, so, i guess there's nothing for him to worry. Thanks for your responses.

I Think that 74 percent is kinds low. I have a hard drive that is at least 8 years old and is still at like 80 precent life
