got a laptop query......

good afternoon OCN...... i hope were all in a festive mood!!

i have an issue with my brothers laptop, he bought a Dell about a year ago which came with vista x32.

so we setup a partition & installed x64 ''7'' in a dual boot config... he's been using the 7 partition now for all that time.

he,s now getting strange BSOD's (not heat related) & i cant restore b/c there are no restore points set.

so........ whats the easiest way i can scrub EVERYTHING on the HDD (including Dell crap) & start over with a fresh copy of W7...?? boot to CD & reinstall..??

is there any write protection on the Dell files ..??

thanks....

Not sure about your laptop, but on two of my older Dell's (600m and 1505E) I simply used GParted to repartition the whole drive to a single partition, and re-formated. I then installed Win7 into that partition and all the older Dell bits where gone.

Yes, boot with the DVD, format, reinstall. There's no write protection on the primary partition, however there could be a hidden, recovery partition. You should be able to delete it, but.. why bother?

b/c i cant track down the reason its BSODing..... ive tried all the run of the mill stuff, its malware free, but virus scanners detect about 6 serious infections i cannot remove.. even in ''safe mode'' they keep reappearing when we fire up windows again.

i just wanna start afresh with it..... he's got no warranty left so there's nothing to void.

If you want to get rid of everything for certain try out DBan. 2.6 However seems a bit flaky but it should work. That would wipe everything good.

I would run a single zero pass with DBAN to erase everything. Plus it speeds up the HDD to factory performance.
