Help me overclocking Q6600 on P6N SLI board

Thread Starter
Hi Guys First post on these forums....

After 1 week of research I finally got to know how to overclock tongue.gif....

The problem is that I am unable to go beyond 2.7 with stability on Q6600 (MSI P6N SLI V-2) my vcore voltage is 1.375, I have disabled Spreadspectrum, C1E, HPET, clock mode is linked, VTT is 20%, SB voltage is 1.3, NB voltage is 1.5. When I go to 3.0 the systm runs fine untill I run Prime95, after 1-2 mins of running prime95, the system either crashes or freezes. I even have increased voltage to 1.475 but no luck, Am I missing something? My temp on 2.7 are: idle=28 and load=40 max

I know my board is not so good more overclocking, but I have seen people with stable 3.0(+) on this.

the boards with nvidia chipsets just dont OC as well as the intel chipsets do. its a case by case scenario, some boards do ok and some CPUs do ok, and some dont

first off. begin as simple as possible. you can write down the settings you have now if you want, and start from scratch. just reset to optimized defaults or whatever terminology your board uses and then just start upping the vcore and the FSB. OCing is a slower process, specially if you dont want to break anything lol.

also, have you looked up the stats for your CPU? you need to know the max safe Vcore and the max safe temps for your CPU. just keep this stuff in mind so you dont blow your chip

what settings are your ram on?
is it auto or are they on 667mhz, also have you set them to 1:1 first
also have you adjusted the latency timings?

have you tried it with just the 4gb corsair ram, as mixing ram can have bad results, especially if they have different timings
prime crashing in the first 5 mins, is usually a ram problem

i have the slower Q6600 BE stepping, and i can get it 3.0ghz.

i am no expert, but all i done was
set the ram to 667mhz so my dram freq. was 1:1
increases the vcore by 1 level
kept increasing the fsb by 5mhz at a time and then running prime95 or OCCT linpac test
i have stopped at 333x9, but i havent gone higher yet.
my load temps after 1 hr of prime is 54.c

have a look here
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/893187-q6600-ecs-650i-sli.html
"I had an nforce 650sli board before my p43 and I was able to hit 3.4 Ghz on it easy. Try using the settings below:

The q6600 on the average needs between 1.34v~1.38v (on air) to hit 3.4 Ghz (depending on the CPU vid). Don't worry the q6600 has a max Vcore of 1.55v so setting it to 1.38 v should definitely help you push your chip higher."

Q6600's vid is .85-1.5 v (as on intel site), I finally am able to stably overclock to 2.8 at 1.375v... I tried 2.9, system booted into windows, I started prime95 and as soon as I started to run it, system freezes... What does suggest, increase my vcore slightly....?

Here the screen shots of my CPU-Z

Fire up CoreTemp and get your chip's VID. It will be helpful as to how far you can push it. Mine has a 1.3125 VID. With sig rig it runs 3.5 @ 1.41v 24/7.

Keep experimenting and good luck with your OC.

I set my frequency to 1333mhz and upped the vcore to 1.275v giving me 3.0ghz easilly. I havent pushed any further, all other voltages are on auto apart from my ram which is 2.2v. temps on prime go no higher than 65C.

1.375v for 2.7ghz seems abit high to me, make sure ram is unlinked and set at standard frequency with standard timmings, to rule out instability due to ram settings. Get the cpu stable first.

hi ahmed, every cpu can have a different vid.
to find yours, return the cpu to stock speed 2.4ghz.
open cpu-z
then run prime 95. you want the vid number when the cpu is under load.
then the lower the vid, the more you can overclock.

try leaving your ram at 667,
if your fsb is 333 then if your ram is 667 this will give you a dram freq. of 1:1
you have it a 345x2=690 giving you the 9:10 ratio

[IMG]fsbstraptonorthbridge.png

have you tried with just the corsair ram?

your cpu-z pics are showing 4gb ram. and yet your corsair are only 2gb.

PLEASE do this, as mixing ram can cause loads of problems.
also corsair dhx 800 ram has latency timings of 5-5-5-18 and a 1.9 to 2.0v vdimm

and your cpu-z pics show timings of 5-6-6-16
remove the kingston ram and set the corsair ram to 667 or auto
then try 333 x 9

Thank You everyone..... I tried with only Corsair RAM..... Even with single stick of 1 GB.... I set FSB to 1333 and 14000, with memory cpu ratio 1:1, default timings..... but no chance... Seems 2.8 is the max stable in my case..... still em happy with that....... 400 MHz increase is enough for me..... plus I got a 0.1 increase in Windows 7 Performance Index, lol........
