vista upgrade questions

i'm trying to fixup/upgrade my parents laptop. it's this:

TOSHIBA Satellite P205D-S7438 NoteBook

it's got a 64-bit dual-core cpu. it came factory installed (or whatever) with vista 32-bit. now, there is no disc for it, but i have the product key sticker on the laptop. if i can find a vista disc, can i use it to run an install, using my product key to activate it? ie can i upgrade my version of vista without buying a new copy?

if so, all i'll have to do is make sure i update to 64-bit drivers for the components in the system, right? or is there anything else i should be concerned about or need to do research on?

one more question: do you think it would be better to just stick with 32 bit for this old of a system? i'm sure making 64 bit drivers for old tech wasnt a huge priority, so wondering if they might not be a bit buggy and thus a greater irritation to my parents than a benefit.

i'd rather run 7 but iirc the the gpu can't handle it. it doesnt seem like there is any way to upgrade the graphics card for this model either.

on a side note i'm going to upgrade the ram to 2GB and swap in a new keyboard (old one has some faulty keys). trying to think of other things i can do to make this laptop step it up a notch.

any answers/thoughts appreciated!

Vista32 should perform fine-go with 32bit 7 if you do upgrade for less problems.Probably the best thing you could do for it is max the RAM and get an ssd.You should be able to use the old windows key, especially since you are not changing the motherboard.

yea that would work i do it for customer pcs all the time since they never seem to have their cds lol. as far as 64 vs 32 stick to 32 for your parents 64 bit is rather for more advanced users as they can have incompatibilities and tends to be finicky specially vista
