6970 vs 5850x2

Thread Starter
So I run at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 on a 30" monitor and currently have 2 5850's in my rig. I was wondering if I should upgrade to the 6970 2GB card? How much more powerful would it be?

It probably won't be more powerful but you can take advantage of the 2gb of ram due to your resolution. The average fps would rise aswell. Plus you could always crossfire another one later if you need more power.

i say do it, one card is always better than two. And you will only lose a little bit of raw horse power, but you will get higher minimum FPS, more VRAM, and you can CF later

CF has been hit or miss w/ the 5xxx series, that's why I didn't added a 2nd 5850 and bought a 6970...I run the same resolution as you, plus 3600x1600 eyefinity, so it has been shown through a number of reviews that @ our resolutions we will benefit a LOT from the 2gb of VRAM

The answer is gtx 460 1gb sli and i'm serious, the gtx 460 1gb is currently the card that scales the best in sli and it blows up many benchmarks (in sli, obviously) better then a gtx 480, right behind the gtx 570...

that setup is terrible at high resolution. the vram destroys them.

the 6950/70 shine at 1440 and above. the 580 still holds a better min frame rate at that resolution however but o/c the 6970 and it will be a nicely closed gap on a stock 580.

i wish the 6990 was out cause that will be the card of choice for best frames on a single card setup.

Hm... I had the privilege once of running a GTX 460 1gb sli rig side by side with a 5870 rig, and there was some severe microstutter on the sli rig (in my mind, it still beat the 5870, but only just) (this is crysis 2560x1600). I'd stay clear from Sli, personally. One powerful single-gpu will not be equal, but will give similar performance in most games.

A one card solution is always better. And you can XFire it sometime later for even better results!
