Celestial bodies can be used to help increase speed by using the body's gravitational mass as a force to project the object. It's been used for satellites, long distance programs (Voyager/Pioneer), and other orbiters/robotics.

The effect is essentially similar to a 'sling-shot'.

I think scientists should work on an array of planetary defence systems and warships before sending out some squeeky-boffin's voice to open space, or some music that'll probably entice war.

That or the sheer deterioration will make in complete gibberish anyway, as long as they don't send this, we should be fine:-

That was my thought too. The bit about intercepted messages has me concerned. Our single example of how life develops space-faring ability shows us that only a planet's most successful predators will achieve the capability and only after much bloodshed. While there is no Unobtainium on our planet, there is one unique resource - genetic codes. If there is a species out there like Borg or Zerg, something that values genetic diversity and will commit violence to add those traits to their own collective gene pool, we'd be in serious trouble if they found our planet.
