Apollo 13 and yes they really did essentially do that. That mission was way closer to the moon's surface than it was supposed to be though that was just so it would redirect them on course with the Earth without risking blowing themselves up (they thought the explosion that caused the leak may have caused engine damage) and wasting fuel.

Yes actually we have, but not with the space shuttle.

If you know anything about Apollo 13, their main engine exploded, rendering it useless. This was about halfway to the moon. Because they engine could not be used to get back, they used the moons gravity to slingshot themselves back towards earth and then used the engine on the Lunar Module for course correction.
