Pulling together an HTPC? Yes

Thread Starter
I am recently new to HTPC setups, and I have a couple of questions...

I have a few leftover parts from and older PC and I am wanted some insight on where I should go as far as parts are to fill in the gaps. I will be using something around a 40" HD TV and will want to have it setup to play Blu-Ray as well.

Following components that I have include:

-Asus M4A79T Deluxe Motherboard
-Coolmaster 850w PSU
-H50 CPU Cooler

Previously I was using an P4 965 but I was looking to throw something in there a little on the not as expensive range.

Recommendation on CPU's?

What kind of video card capability am I shooting for when it comes to silence and power?

Ram recommendations?
Was using Corsair Dominators but once again looking to budget.

Keyboard/Mouse combos??

Feel free to enlighten me on anything that I am missing =)

Edit: I will be running Ubuntu 10.10

That HTPC, is going to be way overkill with a 965...

An athlon x2 will be fine and so will a 5450.

For a CPU I was looking into a P2 555

Yes, a 555 is overkill. As said, for a strict HTPC, an Athlon II (or even a Sempron 140) will be all you need.

An 850w PSU is also way overkill. I know you already have it, but HTPC's are low power rigs (like 150w or so).

A passive 5450 also is all you need.

Seems as if I have a warped perception on power demand for HTPC's.

I settled down on the power trip and settled for a nice find on craigslist boxed and sealed Athlon x2 250 for $45, but still up in the air for RAM options. Must be DDR3, and yes I am doing research and not just relying on post.

You can get 4 gbs of DDR3, the corsair xms3 for cheap.
