Remote Desktop

Thread Starter
Hi All

Trying to set up remote desktop so I can log onto my work computer from home during the holidays...

Here is what I have done:

On the Host (work computer):
- Enabled Remote Desktop under "My computer" > "Properties" > "Remote"
- Added Remote Desktop to Windows Firewall.
- Got the IP address from "whatismyip.com"

On my home computer:
- I think I opened the 3389 port of my router, I used my IP address (Home IP) in the field for the IP address
- Opened up Connect to Remote Desktop
- Entered in my work computer (Host) IP address

It fails to connect...

What am i doing wrong, can any guide me through this please?

Home:
Win Vista 64 Home Premium

Work:
Win XP Professional

Any ideas?

Thanks

Logmein it is free and amazing.

It will save you the trouble of doing all that, and they have a Droid/iPhone app if needed.

I would look into VNC or Real VNC. Much better method to do what your looking for. But I would definitely make sure your ports are forwarded correctly. Rdp can be tricky

Ill try the Logmein thing... If it works like it should... Basically I want to be able to work from home during the holidays... However there are applications that I use on my work computer, and outlook for emails etc... So I want to be able to just leave my work computer on... And remotely log into that so that its like Im sitting at my workdesk... Does logmein do that?

We use to use teamviewer at work. Works like a charm! RDP sucks if you aren't using it on a vps or dedi. same goes with a vnc

Where do you work? You might want to get in touch with the IT department to see if there is a firewall, virtual subnet, or if it is even allowed first. Thy might even have a VPN program for you to use.

Yep.
There's no way to log in to computers at my work from home without VPN.
