I can't find anything small enough to open up the second smaller wing which makes direct contact with the tiny metal wires.

I apologize for my technical jargon (old habits are hard to break), so, just to clarify so that we are all referring to the same things;
The wire (or cord, as you put it) is the conductor.
The contact (or pin, or terminal) is what you will be crimping onto the end of the conductor, and then will be inserting into the connector (or plug, or housing).
