$1200 Budget Build

Thread Starter
My friend has $1200 for his new PC.
He needs:
CPU
Mobo
RAM
GPU
HDD (SSD+HDD)

Off the top, the prices for Sandy Bridge (judging from the thread here on OCN):
i7 2600 $294
Gigabyte Intel P67 ATX MP LG1155 - $113

So he's set on those when that's released.

I recommended the following:
GPU : EVGA GTX 570 = $360
RAM : Patriot Viper II Sector 7 Edition 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3-2000 $125
HDD: Caviar Black 500GB $60
SSD: Plextor PX-64M1S 64GB SATA II $95

The PC will not be overclocked.
Everything at stock.

Any suggestions?

I'd get a Samsung f3 rather than the Caviar Black, you will get much more storage for that price point.

I would spend a little more money (~$30) and pick up a C300 instead. The C300 should blow that plextor out of the water in not just benchmarks but real world performance as well.

unless you NEED your system now i would wait a couple of weeks for Sandy Bridge. that way you will save money on RAM and you can buy a beast CPU and mobo

Also get a Samsung F3. they are so much better than WD.

Good point and bad point at the same time. He already says in the OP he is going for sandy bridge. But then he also picked a tri channel RAM set, so you are right about that.

OP, find a 2x2 set of ram, sandy bridge doesn't support tri channel.

Ok thanks all.
He did look a bit skeptical regarding the Plextor SSD, and he chose the Crucial instead.
And I did tell him to get the 1GB F3.
Ok, I will switch it to Dual-Channel.
Anything else?
