Is PhysX dying off? - Page 2

Nvidia eliminates probably half of their possible consumer base by not officially supporting physx cards to be used with ati cards. Physx is a niche market within an already niche market, they should be reaching out to as many customers as possible. I don't know much behind the programming of physx but it would be helpful if the cards could be used to boost physics performance in games that are not created with physx in mind. I'm sure many people here would buy a dedicated card if nvidia could accomplish those two things.

PhysX is good, we just haven't reach a point were the hardware is able to delivery on it well enough to make it awesome and still be a reasonable cost addition to any rig.

That and I think there is so much going on it's easy to miss the little things, and that's all PhysX is, it's the little things.

Tessellation is the new Physx only this time both green and red can run it (albeit green is better at it). There has yet to be a game with good tessellation. The so called "bribe" money is being used by both colors to encourage devs to throw in half arsed, craptastic tessellation (see AvP, Lost Planet 2, Dirt 2, Stalker and many others).

I was hoping Crysis 2 would be the first DX11 title to set an example but since the original Crysis did not set a good example of DX10, one can't hope for too much.

I dont think there are BIG titles coming. Last physX game was iirc was mafia 2 which was back in august. Now some new titles are being worked on crysis 2 batman AC ..etc. In any case nvidia is currently pushing 3d vision and surround gaming more than physX.

Is Mirror's Edge good? Should have a PhysX Steamsale lol. Maffia II is 33 but I think it will drop lower.

BC2's "physics" isn't always exactly the same. Depends on where you shoot a building, but it's a pretty good step forward.

BC2's use of the Havok physics engine is scalable to as many threads as you want. Havok will only get better with better CPUs.

Yeah, you can barely notice Tessellation in today's games. Going from medium to extreme Tessellation in Unigine Heaven 2.1 is such a dramatic change, if only games would implement it properly...

I think PhysX will eventually die off with the use of more powerful CPUs as the use of software physics will replace it just as software audio has surpassed the old hardware audio acceleration in Creative cards.
