Building an External Water Cooling System - Page 3

post #21 of 35
I like it expect for two minor quibbles (which you have actually addresed above):

1. Would prefer to accomodate p/p with shrouds on both sides. 180mm-200mm per rad/shroud/fans.

2. Support for 480 and a PSU enclosure. PSU would be able to power the sixteen push/pull fans and the pump.

16 Fans? Wouldn't it only be 8 fans? Or are you thinking 2x Quad 120mm Radiators?
As for the power supply, I originally planned to have an independent power brick, but then just decided to tap the PSU in my computer, since it is a good one. Additionally, keeping the PSU out of the enclosure might be beneficial heatwise.

But yes, when doing something like this, you have the freedom to size the enclosure perfectly for your needs. For me, I am going for space efficient and noise efficient. I am going to start out with GentleTyphoons, but if more cooling is required, I have the space built in to accommodate single 38mm fans with shroud. That's about as noisy as I would be willing to tolerate (and I'd probably still undervolt the fans if they were 38mm).

Just FYI for everyone, these Koolance QuickDisconnects are mindblowingly awesome! Model VL3N is a no spill design, and is truly a thing of beauty to play around with.

Nice job, and YES the Quick Disconnects are awesome. Good flow and if you have to work on ether side of the loop, you don't have to drain the hole loop.

When you do the molex you may want to consider Y'ing it out and running 2 12v lines and 2 grounds with all those fans and the pump. I wouldn't trust one wire to do it all. Just my 2c

Funnily enough, I did use a Y Molex into the case, pump on one and the fans on the other. The wires from the computer to the enclosure will be a larger gauge wire, so there won't be problem there. Additionally, I did a lot of research into the current capacity of the wires, and the rig only pulls in 2.5A at the absolute most (probably overestimating) Molex wires are rated for 11A per pin. So even with all 2.5A on the 12V pin, I'm well within safe limits.

First lazy stab at overclock and temps:

CPU: 3.2GHz -> 4.0GHz
Idle/Load: 34/49C

GPU: 725/1000 -> 950/1200
