Crossfiring Sapphire 5970 with HIS 5850

Thread Starter
Hi,
I just picked up a Sapphire OC edition and am trying to Crossfire it with my older HIS 5850. According to ATI (AMD) It is possible but not nessisaraly reccomended. After having to reinstall drivers a bunch of times, I finally got Catalyst to recognize and CF them. However I am getting the exact same performance as just the 5850. In response, I tried removing the 5850 and performance roughly seems to be the same. Would it be a good idea to reinstall Windows? I am currently backing up to see if it helps, but just incase there is something I have missed, could someone help me out? Also, for those with 5970's what is a stable OC for both GPU's?

Thank You all very much
(And a Merry Christmas!)

Your monitors need to be plugged into the 5970. You're probably using the 1GB of RAM in the 5850?

Or your CPU is probably bottlenecking. I tri-fired my 5970 with a 5830 and had CPU usage upwards of 80% across 6 cores clocked at 4.1GHZ. In BC2.

I didn't have the installation problems that you did though. Installed driver with the two cards installed and it worked great.

EDIT: Done editing...it's late.

Thanks for the quick response!
All 3 screens are plugged into the 5970. I am pretty good with PC's and all (been working with comps since I was about 10). But new to the whole CF and high performance thing. I do remember hearing that it is possible to dedicate a card to AA and such?
Darn. Gonna try to push that poor 965 some more. Have almost held a stable 4.5 but then she gave up forcing me to reset bios to defaults and had to update the BIOS. Never wrote down the settings. Would a x6 help? I know the bulldozer's are comming out soon, but there are often good deals on the classifieds. Also, just want to throw in that if you google 5970 Low Performance, it does bring up a lot of hits. No solid fixes it seems.
and yep. The lateness just hit me too

After reading your original post again you said you get the same performance with the 5970 as the 5850? With the 5970 running, open CCC and be sure Catalyst AI is not set to disabled. I'm pretty sure it's the Catalyst AI setting but can't remember for sure. Anyway that setting (if it's the one I'm thinking of) disables CF so your 5970 would only be using one GPU and getting performance similar to your 5850.

What games are you playing? I couldn't get Source games (CS:S LFD LFD2 etc) to run in Tri-fire. So I don't think they support it.

Check your CPU usage in game by running task manager open to the performance tab in the background to check usage with Eyefinity. An X6 wouldn't hurt with your cards and resolution.

I haven't read anything about a dedicated AA card.

Here, I attatched a sample of whats happening.
Note. After a successful reinstallation of Windows, I still have the problem. Would the CPU really be bottlenecking it that much?

By dedicated AA card, do you mean a Arkham Asylum card () or Anti Aliasing card?

I usuually play source, but any computer can play it on full as its a great engine.
But I see the performance issues in games such as Dirt 2 and Metro 2033.
What programs/commands are out there that I can use to monitor the cpu ussage?

Thanks!
