tell me what YOU think!

i want to see how this rig i've put together sparkles with you all and ask the experts for any suggestions or recommendations before i buy. i'm building my first new system in like 4 years. i've been doing a lot of research over the past few weeks and need to buy these parts like yesterday, but i'm feeling rather OCD about this purchase and don't want to pull the trigger until i'm sure. i'm going to get a BFG 9800 GX2 on the low low from my boss. i'm on a suffocatingly tight budget. this is the supporting cast (perhaps some stars in their own rights) i have lined up:

Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103887

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX $84 w/ MiR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131402

CORSAIR XMS3 2x2GB DDR3 1600 $40 w/ MiR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145260

Diablotek PHD Series PHD850 850W ATX12V v2.2 $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817822012

my logic in a nutshell:

CPU: i would like 4 GHz. i chose the 560 because the games i'm playing right now don't seem to scale well with extra cores. if i can unlock them however, then i'll play with them. super bonus!

Mobo: seems like a great board at such a great price because of all the RMAs and negative reviews by people needing BIOS update before the CPU they just bought will work. pssh... make a friend why don't you i plan on pushing this CPU as far as i can. that's most important. i don't see a need for sata 6g/s or USB 3.0. sata 3g/s seems plenty fast for me for years to come. i have a dream... of finding another 9800 gx2 super cheap later on and running them side by side with the patch/hack. although i'm not so sure i would be successful. i'm also curious as to what kind of handicap spliting them 8x and 8x will do on newer cards in tandem. that being said, multiple PCI-e 2.0 slots is not even a concern at all compared to overclocking reputation. i'd almost rather gear my mobo and PSU more towards a single video card outlook.

PSU: i know this isn't a name brand but it appears to have output ratings that exceed what i would need for this setup + another 9800 gx2. although $70 dollars seems too good to be true.

RAM: i'm basically open to whatever. $40 also seems too good to be true.

THANKS in advance! please comment any thoughts. i wanna soak it up like a sponge.

PS: as for all the other parts of a computer i already have them. that is except for third party cooling. i don't have enough room in my brain to think about that until next year. the stock phenom II HSF has heatpipes right? will it fit am2?

Beware of vdroop with that mobo. It can be a bit bad (mine got as low as 1.09v when it should have been 1.25v).

Your psu choice is ultracrap but other than that it sounds good! Go with a corsair or antec psu....

PSU - don't get that one. Here's a nice Antec for $80 after coupon and rebate
post #5 of 21
Here is a reason why not to get that PSU. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=187

Read that review and stay away from diablotek. OCZ makes some decent power supplies, also if you want some of the best go with seasonic.

i'm reading up more on what vDroop is now.

i didn't expect i would end up buying that PSU. it was mostly a space filler.

pretty much exactly what it sounds like. what a tragic feature. so, would i be right in assuming that even if your motherboard is susceptible to vDroop you can combat it with a quality power supply?

havn't bought anything yet. still trying to make my mind up on the mobo if anyone has anymore suggestions. prolly gonna finalize in the next few hours. thanks for all help so far though.

My suggestions:
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130235 $99.99
This one uses the Nvidia chipset, so no need to gamble with the sli hack. Run 2 9800s no problem. (I will probably get flamed for suggesting an Nvidia chipset in an ATI build)
If you want to stick with AMD chipset mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157198 $89.99
CPU and cooler combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.374234 $114.98 (save yourself ten bucks on the cpu, you're gonna OC it anyways.)
PSU and memory combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.567277 $119.99 after MIR
Or get the corsair on its own and get better memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226103 $64.99 after MIR

Total is $334.96 (priced as combos)
For $40 more than yours, you get sli ready board, cpu cooler, and an infinitely better psu.

thanks for the great suggestions badwrench.
the specs on that board look perfect for me. i've just heard that nVidia chipsets on AMD boards dont overclock well. also with MSI i heard with the 4+1 phase power they tend to blow up when overclocked. but, i don't really know what i'm talking about.

that PSU looks good, but would it power 2 9800 gx2s if i go that route in the future? it only has 2x 6+2 PCIe power plugs. if it's powerful enough i could get an adapter though i suppose.
