New Nvidia Drivers - GTX 580 - vent

UPDATE (12/22/2010): JUST TO BE CLEAR THE PROBLEM WITH DRIVERS IS SOLVED. THE PURPOSE OF THE THREAD WAS TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM AND EXPRESS AN OPINION ABOUT THE NEW NVIDIA DRIVER SET. THANK YOU.

I decided to post this thread to vent about my problems with the new Nvidia drivers and also to relate how I was able to get through the problem and get my Nvidia card working. I must have installed and uninstalled two different driver releases about a dozen times a piece.

I've recently upgraded to a GTX 580. I spent several hours tonight getting this card to work. I finally relented and installed and ran a driver cleaner (Driver Sweeper). I had to run it several times because pieces of the Nvidia driver set apparently did not want to go away.

The problems I was having actually looked like hardware problems. The card was crashing to the desktop when watching videos. It was showing artifacting on the desktop. The thing that clued me into the fact that it was really the drivers was that when I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, the regular windows drivers showed no signs of these problems and would allow me to play videos.

I've never before had to use a third party tool to remove Nvidia drivers. Up until now, I only needed to do that with ATI cards. I've built and played around with a huge amount of gaming computers. As I said, I actually thought my GTX 580 was defective due to artifacting on the desktop and crashes referring to "video kernal does not like you" or something like that.

The issue I have with this is that one of the reasons I stick with Nvidia is to avoid this type of crap with drivers. I've owned many ATI cards and one of the common problems was that there were difficult to solve driver issues with some of them or weird problems with specific applications. If Nvidia is going to release drivers even worse than that of ATI, they have a problem.

I have owned or used the following graphics Nvidia cards:
FX 5200
FX 5500
Geforce 3 Ti 500
Geforce 4 Ti 4600
6600 GS
6800
6800 GT
7600 GT
7800 GTX
8600 GT
8600 GTS
9600 GSO
9600 GT
8800 GTS 320
9800 GT (8800 GT)
9800 GTX (9800 GTX+ / GTS 250)
GTX 295

With those cards I could simply uninstall the drivers, install the card, and install new drivers with no problems. Ever.

Ridiculous.

Now, with the GTX 580, I actually had to run a driver cleaner program to remove all traces of the driver. Then I had to do a "custom" install, selecting "clean" install.

I've also owned:
ATI 7000 (something-or-other)
ATI 9600
ATI 9800 PRO
ATI 1900 PRO
ATI HD 3850

Although I had a headache with the drivers for some of these cards, it was nothing like what I experienced tonight with the GTX 580.

Sounds like a real pain. Like you I've also owned several Nvidia and ATI cards. Never had any problems at all. I uninstall old drivers using add/remove programs, reboot and install new drivers. Some people try installing new drivers over the top and wonder why they get problems. Using the ATI 10.10 drivers and everything runs perfectly...so far. Hope you've got it sorted. Should mention I've had Nvidia drivers for the past 4 years so maybe Iv'e missed some dodgy ATI drivers.

Time for a clean OS install? Maybe there are some programs it doesn't like?

Have you fixed this now?

Yes, it was a pain. The worst problems I had with ATI drivers were for the HD 3850. The drivers it came with set the fans to a setting that was almost completely off. I had to figure out how to find the XML file and edit it manually in order to get the fans to run fast enough to cool the card down so that it would not be damaged. In most games it ran fantastic, the only problem was that in actual windows it would hang and freeze for no reason. Other than that the other ATI cards I had would just have less compatibility with games or would crash in certain applications. I had no problems at all with the X1900 Pro, except that it was not compatible with some motherboards that had certain older VIA chip-sets. I've found ATI also has inferior legacy support for older cards.

...yet none of those problems were like the issue I'm having with the GTX 580. So far its working. Hopefully, it will continue to work.

It appears to be fixed. I'm not seeing artifacting and Crysis plays smoothly.

No, he is complaining about the problems he is having and that he should even have to. I have never run driver cleaner and it has never been necessary. Crappy drivers are crappy drivers.

Both Nvidia and AMD have had driver issues. It sucks when it happens. They tend to do better as time goes on.

Actually, in my post I specifically stated that I had to run it several times. The significance was that with earlier cards and earlier drivers this was never necessary.

Good to hear. I hope there won't be any problems regarding that further. And if so, I hope it's only minor and nothing you can't fix biggrin.gif
