AMD Athlon II X4 640 @ 3.54GHz - Overclocking Tips?

Thread Starter
I went into the shop (MSY) today to buy the Phenom II X4 955. They said they where sold out, but it's christmas too soon (I'm 15) so I wanted to buy it there and then to go with the motherboard I just bought. So, as you guessed, I didn't get the $149 955, but instead got the $106 640. I actually really like how well this processor plays games for the money, but it was mainly to keep me going until Bulldozer comes out, knocking down the price of the X6 series.

Anyway, to the point.

I'm new to CPU overclocking, as my last Athlon 64 X2 6000+ was definitely not something you want to try to overclock (50MHz OC), so this is actually the first time I've done it. I do know quite a lot about overclocking it though, except just a few things. The motherboard is Asus M4A87TD/USB3.

Right now I get this one CPU-Z.

I want to push this to 3.8GHz, which I'm quite sure - with a bit of help - I can do.

Is there anything you can quickly tell me to enter in the BIOS to overclock this thing well? I can't actually remember what I've got everything at, but I'm not quite sure what CPU/NB is, because I've found CPU and NB, so I just can't work out why the Northbridge would also be linked with the CPU as a voltage.

Anyone else have one of these? I'm using stock cooler, just need to know what I should push this to without doing any damage as I'm already on 1.5V right now.

You can up the north bridge say to 224 from 200, it may not get you to 3.8, but since that cpu is not unlocked, you can't use cpu multiplier. That should get you to 3.7. You can try higher, but you have to look at your cooling. If on stock cooling, I wouldn't go higher. Even at that speed your pretty fast.I doubt you'd notice any real difference.

Yeah, I have that CPU, for similar reasons, but haven't tried OC'ing it much yet. And I have a different mobo: the ASRock 870 Extreme3. Good cooler, my Kingwin XT-1264 is pretty much a decent Xigmatek 1283 knock-off, so I should be ok except that I've never OC'd one of these before. I'll be watching this thread, the same ideas should work for me. If I can get 3.7 stable, I'll be happy. That'd probably do me well enough that I could wait for Bulldozer or Sandy Bridge.

That CPU tops out at 3.5 100% stable going 266 FSB on most brands of MBs. I did everything I could to demolish that CPU to get it to 4.0 Ghz using more than 5 MB's & that's my conclusion about this CPU. I managed to get it to 4.0 Ghz but it was not stable. Any higher than 3.7 and it won't last 8 hours on PRIME. Hope that helps.
