thoughts on my build?

Thread Starter
alright guys, so i think im ready to build my first PC, i spent alot of time picking out parts and finding the best deals. i believe i have everything i will need to build my computer, and i also believe the parts ive selected are good, and compatible, and that the case i selected will hold everything correctly. can you guys offer criticism and feedback on the build design, and any advice/ anything i may have overlooked or have not taken into consideration? thanks alot everyone

so i just got this monitor for 140 new off ebay, that leaves everything else. i think i might opt out of water cooling for now. and that will bring the total price of my build to $1005 dollars. not bad for trying to stay within my 1k budget

Looks good, i cant wait for my h70 to get here. The only problem i see with it is the hard drive. Ive heard a lot of bad things about those green drives

Hey, I really like your build--it looks very nice (case & monitor too). I think you'll get great results from it for your use. I'm assuming you still plan on OCing, and this thing should OC like a beast. Don't have any experience with the HyperX ram, but I know those CPU's OC like mad.

Regarding your last question, if you plan on doing lots of rendering, then the PHII X6 would be a better choice. That being said, your i7-950 is no slacker and will do a fantastic job doing the same. It's really your choice and it comes down to how much you want to spend. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

Looks good, my personal thoughts though:

I would get a GTX 460 1GB normal version, rather than the SE. The SE has fewer CUDA cores, slightly lower clocks and a lower texture fill rate. You might not notice the difference, but I'd go for the standard one anyway.

Your RAM has been deactivated on Newegg frown.gif

I would get a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3. It's got pretty similar performance to the Caviar Black series (a lot better than the Green) but it's still quiet, runs cool and doesn't use as much power as the Caviar Black.

It might also be worth spending the extra money to get the GA-X58A-UD3R, I've heard that it's a better motherboard. If you're not overclocking, though, you might not need it.

If the Spinpoint F3 is the same price, sure, can't hurt. I have a bunch of Caviar green's in my PC's and I like them a lot for storage. I don't notice any "slow" performance from them. HD's are always fast to access when I need them (they are storage after-all)... and I feel good about myself that they are "green" drives (i'm all about going green even though my room is full of electronics haha).

If you can, try getting that i7 950 through a microcenter, since it's being sold for only $200. I know there are a few OCN members here that have asked trusted members to buy them one and ship it. Paying $200+tax/shipping is still better than $300+tax.

im still unsure which is better for normal use, and graphics rendering, the 6core amd, or the 4 core intel, as far as this area goes, can anyone offer any advice?

Firstly, this might be the first time I ever gave +rep to someone new, asking for build advice. biggrin.gif The time you spent to get the pictures in there puts a smile on my face. I love helping people with their builds, and I'm always happy when someones comes here with a little bit of research and an idea of what they want-- but you went above and beyond! Kudos!

So, to the build:

Chip is good. GPU is good, if that's what you need. What games were you trying to play with this and at what settings? What else do you plan to do with this rig? What's your budget like?

That RAM is kind of garbage. It's also really slow. I haven't clicked on it but I see a "C9" in the model number. I'll help you find some kits with much better timings, 6 or 7 CL preferably.

Don't skimp on the PSU. Spend a couple extra bucks and find a SeaSonic or something at the same wattage.

Don't get the Caviar Green. At the very least, find a 7200 RPM drive. Anyone here will recommend the F3 or the Caviar Blacks. I'm personally a huge fan of the latter.

Not a fan of that case, but that's a personal preference. lachen.gif

That's a bit... open-ended. Really, you would have to find a real use for 6 physical cores in order for the AMD to make an impression on the i7s. The AMD hexacores are nice, but the i7 quad-cores are generally much, much faster.

For normal everyday stuff, you're not likely to notice a difference, however.
