thoughts on my build? - Page 2

In essence, you can't really go wrong with either an i7 or a X6 for encoding. The i7 has a stronger architecture but lacks the extra two physical cores. It does have HT, of course, but it's not the same.

I would probably choose the X6 if it was just for encoding, the extra cores would come in use. For "normal use" you're not going to notice a difference. For games, the i7 will probably be stronger, although you'll be bottlenecked by a GTX 460 with either one.

Basically, for encoding only, I'd pick the X6, for what you're doing, I'd choose the i7.

So, to the build:

Chip is good. GPU is good, if that's what you need. What games were you trying to play with this and at what settings? What else do you plan to do with this rig? What's your budget like?

That RAM is kind of garbage. It's also really slow. I haven't clicked on it but I see a "C9" in the model number. I'll help you find some kits with much better timings, 6 or 7 CL preferably.

Don't skimp on the PSU. Spend a couple extra bucks and find a SeaSonic or something at the same wattage.

Don't get the Caviar Green. At the very least, find a 7200 RPM drive. Anyone here will recommend the F3 or the Caviar Blacks. I'm personally a huge fan of the latter.

Not a fan of that case, but that's a personal preference.
haha woo. well my budget im trying to keep around 1 grand, but if its worth it i can save a little longer and upgrade.

i wont be doing much gaming (well at least i dont atm, but who knows what ill like in the future). i will be doing graphics editing and video editing on it.

i already have the screen, so thats the only thing set in stone, its around 1 grand right now, but wouldnt be too against adding a little more.

so the ram is bad eh? i thought it was pretty good, hyperx 1600. guess theres things i should look into more. you said you might have a better suggestion? im really interested in that if you could share more.

and ill look up the Caviar Blacks.

one more thing was that someone had mentioned was that certain members can get the 950 for 200 dollars?! whow mama where can i find someone to hook ME up like that?! can you guys get anything else crazy cheap like that?

Certain members? It's just at Micro Center for that price I believe.

As for the RAM, it's not awful, but you want to avoid CL9 at that speed really.

You have the budget available, so I'd look at something like 1600MHz 7-8-7-21 or lower. 7-7-7-20 is going to be too much really.

You'll notice the gain (a little bit) going from CL9 to CL7, not so much from CL9 to CL8.

Not sure what you know about RAM timings, let me know if what I just said there is too much for you

You should try to fit in better RAM and a better PSU on that budget.

Here's a great kit:

It's about ~$25 more than what you had originally, but the timings are much better. $120 is actually a really great price for this set.

Ah yes, the infamous $200 950. That really depends on where you live . That deal is still good if you live near a Microcenter.

Yeah, OCZ PSUs are mediocre. Not awful, but not the best.

+1 on that RAM, looks like a good kit.

I'd also get a 6850 over the 460 se. Or just go overclocked 460. Much better in the long run.

i also heard alot of programs cant take full advantage of all 6 cores, so in alot of instances 4 cores that are stronger would run better than 6 cores that run a little below. so what applications can take full advantage of 6 cores?

i would say get a air cooler like NH-D14 or a coolink corator as they perform similar if not better than the H50, and i think they cost a bit less as well (not 100% sure bout that tho)

He picked out an H70. The H70 and the NH-D14 or Silver Arrow are all similarly priced, depending on where you buy them, and all perform just as well.

I personally also prefer the Silver Arrow over the H70, but space is something to take into consideration. I don't know too much about that Phantom case.
