New AMD - ATI Based Build

Thread Starter
Hello OCN!

I am building a new rig for my Dad. I already have 8GB of ram (4 x 2GB), 850w PSU, monitor, a CD Drive and a case.

The budget is about £400 to spend and he needs a gaming rig. And we wont be overclocking it.

This is what i have in mind:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 £120

I was looking at a Crosshair IV Formula but its around £150 so a bit expensive. So any suggestions on motherboards would help.

Seagate Barracuda ST3500418AS 500GB - £30
I also need help on a graphics card. I was thinking of an XFX 5850, but thats about £150. or maybe an XFX 5770 which is more affordable £100.

He is also in need of a new mouse and keyboard. he wants wired and they need to be good for gaming.

Thanks in advance guys!

He's in London guys. Newegg is states only....

These prices are in pounds.. I have NO idea what VAT is....

Core I5 2500K - 144.90
http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...+I5+2500&go=go

Asus P67 EVO- 131.05
http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...prodID=B543512

ANY P67 Motherboard will work with that processor. Look around on that site.

That processor will blow away the X6 for the same amount of money. Best processor for the money on the market today. It's not even on the market here in the states yet.

There's no point in building an Amd rig when sandy Bridge for the same money is 40% faster.

Maybe it's his preference? I mean OP said it's for his DAD, meaning the dude probably won't need a the fanciest processor around. Go for the phenom x4 dude. But make you sure buy AM3 so that you can upgrade to Bulldozer later, if you so choose.

Give him your Formula II and you get a shiny new Formula IV?
Can you fit a 6850 in that budget? That's your best bet

Core i5 2500K @ £144.90 + 15% vat = £170.26

Asus P67 Evo @ £131.05 + 15% vat = £153.98

These will go up next year (January) due to the vat rising to 20%, but the website states the prices on the site with vat so it should be updated automatically.
