TESIV Oblivion: Lag with Anti Aliasing?

Ok so today I was having quite a lot of lag when playing Oblivion, especially when I went to grasslands, and I was able to find the culprit.... 8x AA.

The thing is with my specs wouldn't I be able to use AA?

AA uses alot of GPU power, and Oblivion doesnt support multi GPU's so that would take the power of your HD 5970 to half. then if your running in 1080p and have everything maxed out i wouldnt be surprised if you got some lag. Oblivion isnt the best ported game as well, it has glitches and bugs. also not too sure, but is your power supply enough for what your trying to run? HD 5970 is a pretty big card, and i7's consume a fair amount of power when they are overclocked.

If you want HDR, simply disable AA in the game, enable HDR and go to AMDs CCC and force super sample AA, id suggest using 2X SSAA for best performance and since you are on 1080, you really don't need more samples, if you do well bad performance.
You can also force AF through CCC in oblivion, which is great.

Id suggest reading This
Its a guide on tweaking oblivion INI file, to make it use more of the computer resources, enable some multithreading abilities of gamebryo and other neat things. It really helped increase my loading times and overall stability of the engine once Ive applied the tweaks gone over in that guide.

Keep in mind, that i use many mods in my game, some like modded textures for almost everything, natural weather, LOD texture pack, unofficial patches and many others i cant name from the top of my head. Game runs with decent FPS in the range of 30-75FPS.

Remember, once you done editing the INI file, make sure you set it to read only, oblivion has this tendency to edit the file and change alot of the tweaks you might apply to engine defaults, so setting the file to read only will prevent that. Only downside, you cant save the video settings once you change and apply them ingame. Basically, do any video detail tweaking and save em before tweaking the file.

Nope, I have it disabled when I have AA enabled. Also what is HDR?

High dynamic range, basically makes all the light sources look really nice and realistic VS having it disabled. HDR and AA don't play nice once on DX 9 so you can only have one enable ad a time. SSAA however, plays nice with HDR so you can use then both with no problems.

What about AF however? Application settings, or do I set it to a sample rate?

AF, uncheck application controlled or managed and set the samples to whatever you desire. I use x16.
