Parents, the next time you fret that your child is wasting too much time playing video games, consider new research suggesting that video gaming may have real-world benefits for your child's developing brain.

Daphne Bavelier is professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. She studies young people playing action video games. Having now conducted more than 20 studies on the topic, Bavelier says, "It turns out that action video games are far from mindless."

No surprise.
When I was in high school, playing games helped raise my G.P.A from a 1.6 to a 3.8.

Great stuff thumb.gif

I agree as long as they dont develop the brain and a fat ass ...so play games but also do some exercise and we are good.
What really have developed my brain is my freakin job doing 3 computer IT chats at the same time...plus reading stuff on forums and playing with my Galaxy S phone at the same time! eek.gif

Honestly, after raiding in WoW, I noticed I was able to multi task much better. I know is said action games specifically, but I think strategy and rpgs will make a difference as well.

When done in moderation, I agree with what the article states. The problem is that it's too easy to become a junkie and spend 6+ hours per day on games, especially for kids and teens.

So true. The very first time I ever played paintball (just to use a real life example) my friends were embarrassed that I completely destroyed them tactically. I even played on my own against a group of them and took every one of them out. Not trying to be a showoff, I'm being honest. Tactical shooters (specifically) train so many mind skills that you're not conscious you use while you're playing. I used to be quite a good climber/runner (I was into free running/parkour) and would literally climb onto roofs like you typically do in games crouch-jumping onto tall objects LOL. (except I would obviously climb, not crouch-jump)

I think that so long as you limit yourself and get your 20-30 minutes of exercise and plenty of social interaction, playing video games BENEFITS you.

I learned to multitask through gaming, but in a different way than how this describes. I basically used to play games while my parents yelled at me (for one reason or another), and after about 5-10 minutes of yelling, my parents would say "ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?!" and demand that I repeat everything they said... which I eventually learned how to do.

On a happier note, my girlfriend likes that I can play games and talk to her at the same time.

I agree with it somewhat, but it varies on the persons mind greatly, with kids and teens 3hrs of gaming can turn into a full day if they no have distractions or plans. Of course, everything needs to be in moderation.

Playing WoW has taught me some more basic math, multitasking skills, leadership skills, and skills to identify idiots more easily than others.

FPS games have GREATLY improved my hearing. my hearing is like a hawk, I can hear everything. I can hear my iphone vibrate ringing on the top floor, and im in the basement with SNF on.

Ya. Its that good.
