Radeon 6970 Eyefinity Information

Hello, I'm new here well not completely I've been lurking on this site for awhile now.

I created this post to share some information/experience I've had with my Sapphire Radeon 6970 and ATI Eyefinity. I apologize if this information is redundant or widely known. I didn't seen anything on google when I was trying to figure out a solution to my problem.

Ok.. Here it is..

Back story:
I recently purchased a Radeon 6970 and an active display adapter from my local computer store. I wanted to upgrade to a high end ATI card instead of the 2x5770s + 5750 I was using in Tri-fire (Which works excellent btw I got the idea from here).

The active display adapter I bought is an Accell (B087B-002B) DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual Link (Active). Paid 99.99 + tax (13% tax)
http://www.accellcables.com/products...DP/dp_dvid.htm

Since the adapter uses DP I used the miniDP-male to DP-Female adapter that Sapphire provided with the Radeon 6970.

To Give you an idea of the setup:
6970 miniDP port -> miniDP-male to DP-Female -> Accell adapter -> DVI to HDMI cable -> Samsung BX2350 Monitor

The DVI to HDMI cable comes with the Samsung monitor.

Problem:
This setup worked for all of a day until the monitor connected to the miniDP port crapped out.

Note: I was fighting Isenberg in Lost Planet at the time so losing one of my monitors threw me off felt like losing an eye.

I tried switching miniDP ports on the 6970, uninstalling catalyst drivers with driver sweeper and re-installing, re-setting the eyefinity group, rebooting my machine. Nothing worked.

Then I used another monitor and the same issue occured on the other monitor. So I ruled out that the monitors are ok and it has something to do with the connection.

I tried the Accell adapter with the DVI to HDMI cable on my media PC. MY media PC is using a Radeon 5770 Flex. I connected the adapter directly to the DP port on the 5770. Picture came up on the monitor so the cable and the adapter were still working.

So all that left was the miniDP-male to DP-female adapter provided by Sapphire. I didn't have another to test if it that was the problem and looking to buy another one of those adapters is a pain in the ass. Especially since I wanted to go to the store and pick one up immediately.

Solution:
So to solve the problem I went to best buy and took a chance on buying an apple miniDP to VGA adapter for $39.99 + tax (13% in canada)

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A

This worked! So far with no issues. I read online that it's hit or miss but I didn't see a straight definite answer. So I wanna state that eyefinity will work on a Radeon 6970 with this apple miniDP to VGA adapter. At least for me it worked and it might work for others.

My eyefinity resolution is 5760x1080 (3x 1920x1080) and I'm not seeing any lag or funny business on the monitor using the apple adapter.

Not yet at least but I wanted to share this with people.

Short version:
For those who don't wanna read all that

- Got Radeon 6970 with Accell Adapter B087B-002B
- One monitor crapped out
- Realized Sapphire's mini-DP to DP adapter was what really crapped
- Got an Apple mini-DP to VGA adapter
- God is in his heaven and all right with my eyefinity world

/end

Update:
- When playing games, the monitor on the miniDP to VGA adapter takes a second longer to load up when the game starts up in full screen mode (Not a real issue games are still playable)
- When the computer "sleeps" your monitors to save energy the monitor on the VGA adapter doesn't wake up. To get around this you can turn off the power saving feature or Go to your screensaver settings and click preview while Windows Live Photo Gallery is selected as the screensaver.

I was thinking of pissing on it..

I don't know really because WTH. I'm suspecting that the active adapter somehow did something to it.. or maybe it's just cheap stuff.

Couldn't handle all the awesome that went thru it

Sorry it's been awhile I'm assuming you're talking about the adapter.

I got the Mini-DP VGA adapter from Best Buy.
