ssd performance question

I've been seriously considering getting a ssd drive for my W7 install that I plan on using to replace Vista. I've been reading reviews and I plan on getting this ssd drive after x-mas becasue I can probably get a nice price for boxing day from the computer store down here north of the border.

This is My Choice Below:

OCZ (OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G) Vertex 2 Extended SATA II 2.5" 60GB Solid State Drive, Read: 285MB/s, Write: 275MB/s

http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=032114

The question I had with regards to the ssd drives is the information capacity that the drive can handle before performance is hindered? I would hazard to guess that anything more than 70%, approximately 42gb of a 60gb drive would probably slow it down considerably. I'm not too sure if the ssd has the inherent issue of a normal drive where there's the buffer that needs to be reserved in order to ensure maximum performance. Can anyone advise if they have a ssd that slows down at a certain capacity of the drive?

Thanks

my x25-m 80gb is filled 53% and my write speeds have been cut in half.

read speeds and access times have also decreased a little.

i suggest getting a bigger drive and only filling it up 30%ish to keep maximum performance.

30%? That is pretty low.

That much of a decrease in your write speeds seems odd when you only have it filled to 53%.

Jones, the main benefit of having the SSD is the crazy read speeds. A good estimate is to never fill it up past 80-85%. Intels already have some "hidden" buffer space that is set aside. I have mine filled about 50% and it is still going fast.

If you are going to pay the money for the SSD, you might as well use it. :-)

That's awseome...thanks for the info guys. When I do get this ssd after the holidays I plan on using it as a boot drive, gaming drive adn programs. I already have 2 wd caviar black 750 gb drives for storage and plan on backing it all up on a 1.5 tb or higher wd essentials drive. I don't plan on really putting anything on this drive that doesn't meet absolute essential access protocols meaning if I'm not using it on a daily basis then it's going on the storage drives.

Going with a higher drive might not be feasible since there won't be any mass storage going on just programs for quick access, useage and enjoyment. It'll be nice to have one of these drives. Gaming will be more enjoyable and programs will run smoother. I can't wait.

Thanks

My 80GB SSD is filled over 50% and still maintains top read and write speeds. Is yours GEN 1 with no TRIM function?

Haven't gotten a ssd yet. The thread was just for information purposes to find out the capacity at which a ssd can be filled and still maintain the same performance. I think I may go for something at a minimum 80 g although I have seen some velociraptor drives pretty low in price but there are some ssd's that come pretty close with incentives such as instant rebates.

i have G2 with TRIM enabled.

My 80GB G2 Intel has reduced write speed somewhat, but not noticeable, it's still blazing fast, and read-speeds are as fast as ever.

Also Remember Sandforce have 14% OP (vs 7% on most other brands)

(85% full, hit 90% when I wasn't looking)

can you post some AS SSD benchmark results?
i'm curious why my ssd is underperforming.

My original results are in my AS SSD Benchmark thread in the spreadsheet.

But I will post teh comparison here:

When I started I was stuck on ICH7 in IDE mode, but the drive was new (and pretty much empty):

Then my mobo died, so I had to upgrade anyway so I got a new board with ICH10 and AHCI, at first I started with Microsoft's msahci.sys driver:

Then I upgraded to Intel's RST v10.0.0.1046:

Then recently I upgraded to 10.1.0.1008, and had filled the drive completely, and then emptied it to 84% (where it is now):

So make what you will of it... I'm still happy with the performance

If I was Anal I suppose I could go secure erase it every 2 days
