You can, but I'm not sure how the higher level cars would behave with a controller. The steering is pretty sensitive on some cars.
There's two official iRacing series that pay money that are run every Feb-Nov called the Driver's World Championship. There's one for oval racing, and one for road racing. Payouts for the first year were $10,000 for 1st, $3,000 for 2nd, and $1,000 for 3rd. I'm thinking this year's will be equal or more, especially on the oval side since NASCAR is running the series.
You have to qualify in through the Pro Series for the DWC though, so not everyone can compete right away.
There's also several private leagues you can try to join that pay various amounts to win.
I also talked to Landon the other day and he's thinking about doing 3 or 4 of these qualifying tournaments a year.
