i7 920 C0 + P6x58D-e + 12GB (2x6) TR3X6G1600C8D issues (Freezing) and questions

I used to have the asus rampage extreme II motherboard.. I had finally found stable 3.6ghz overclock settings that had my ram, all 12GB, all 6 slots, at 1554 or so mhz as well.

Since switching motherboards due to a usb failure on the old one and wanting this board for the new i7 support, i've had nothing but hardship in getting even 2.6ghz to work stable.
This new board is at the 03 bios version i believe.

I have tried every combination of settings imaginable.

My old board worked fine with at 3.61:
Had the qpi at 1.35 volts, cpu and pll voltages were at auto.. all cpu features were at defaults except speedstep.. Dram timings at 9,9,9,26 (default is 8,8,8,24 and 1.65v).
I would run the intel burn test v2.0 3 times (max memory setting) and each time it would succeed..

So on this new board, i tried these same settings (as well as many others at first)..

I decided to use a barebones win 7 x64 image and troubleshoot to avoid the freezes i was having and bsod..

I went with the above settings and ran the burntest several times on this barebones image.. it would report success each time (vs when i tried other settings and it would fail quickly or bsod).

So i thought, ok, ill put back in my main hdd and let her run..

Last night it froze on me (again), during the night.. i had a pictures screen saver going and it was froze on the picture and the usb ports were offline (keyboard dead).

So i guess i'm back to the drawing board.

At this point i've left the regular hdd in, but removed 3 of the 6 sticks and left everything as it was..

I ran the burntest 2x so far, each time it has succeeded (though with this "regular" harddrive, i hadnt ran the test with 12gb in place, maybe ill revert if no freeze overnight and try it again).

Some settings i tried while 12GB in place:

Vcore anywhere from 1.22 to 1.35.
Dram anywhere from 1.64 to 1.68
Qpi 1.35 to 1.4
CPU pll auto to 1.9
Tried LLC enabled, disabled, auto
Tried Spectrums disabled and auto

So my questions are th
ese.. if i prove that this is a ram issue, either bad stick or too many sticks..

Would reducing the ram stick count to something like the gskill 4GB chips (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-231-313&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=3#scrollFullInfo)
make a difference? IE: same 12GB but only 3 chips.. i'm assuming this is an obvious yes. This ram is lower volts, i'm assuming this would be useful

Also.. my cpu i have now is a c0 not a d0 920.. would it be worth my effort to get rid of the cpu and go for the i7 950 d0 which can be had for about $269-$289 shipped, new)?

Lastly, is there anyone out there with this exact same config that wouldnt mind sharing what settings worked?

Perhaps i should put my barebones image back in, and run prime95 for 8-10 hours and see if that one succeeds as well (with 12GB back in), since the burntest did work, i hadnt done this either..

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Been running that board for 6 months and really like it.

I'm going to take a shot and say Ram is your issue.
What type ram are you running and is it on the Asus QVL
list for that board.

12gig has had troubles with the board but usually solved when
set up manually and to listed spec.
Board setup designed to run Mem in Tri for best results
and win 7 64 bit to recognize over 4gig.
Suggest visit Asus forums as to any problems with that setup.

As to 920co, if OC pretty much a handicap;)
If can, and pretty reasonable cost wise go for the 950:)

Now run 4.4 24/7, stable, with 6 gig Corsair 1600 Dominator @1820.
Helps to be water cooled though.

Its corsair dominator TR3X6G1600C8D ram 8 8 8 24 1.65 stock specs.. It was fine with 12gb in the old board.. (at 9, 9 , 9 26 1.65volt on rampage II extreme)

I've decided as a start to just order the G-skill ripjaw ram 9 9 9 24 2N 1.5volt stock specs, F3-12800CL9S-4GBRL 4GB x 3

Hi,

Same Dominator I'm running at 1820 but 3x2 setup.
8-8-8-24 2n 1.65v and able to keep stock timings with OC.

What are you going to do with the Dominators,
or sending them back RMA?

Good Luck

I've tested the sticks, i dont have a memory issue i know that much.

I also have run prime95 for 12 hours so far, no issues, but the most i can get out of my config is 3.6ghz (1.28 volt)/ ~1540mhz on ram (using only 3 sticks at moment) (at 1.6v and auto on qpi).

If i try to push for 3.8ghz i get stop 124 errors.. i played around with every combination of qpi and cpuv setting (as high as 1.375 on cpuv too), just cant pull it off with this combo of hardware (i7 920 c0/c1).

So ill be selling the ram (all of it)/cpu most likely, the gskill 3x4 is coming thursday;

Hi,

Your co/c1 cpu is probably not helping as I have one in another rig
and might as well use it, but junk when it comes to loading it.

With 6gig in Tri, and manually setting ram timings and voltage to spec
you shouldn't have any problems up to at least 4.0.
Power saving features all off.
Temp always a factor.

Take (All) your power saving features and disable them.

Need a few settings can help but looks like you have been there.
Better cooling would also help.

Looking for 2 gigs if you sell.

These boards supposedly take 8gig in Tri using a fourth slot.
8gig just about right but may have to bump V up a little as
alot of us are finding when trying to go for 12gig and OC.
Good luck.wink.gif
