Does Blizzard still ban account sharing?

Thread Starter
Ok... I posted a thread the other day asking how ppl feel about WoW's new Cataclysm expansion. Most ppl said good things about it so I decide to go back to the game this Christmas break.

One of my close friend quit the game a year ago who has several lv 80s. He said I can continue his account instead of start from fresh and save $$ on CD keys. Everything was fine for a few days until I purchase a new digital CD key of Cataclysm on his account with my credit card. Within half day, his account was suspended excellent timing, Blizzard!

He is currently contacting Blizzard trying to get it back... I know account sharing is against Blizzard's TOS, and don't have a problem when they enforce this rule. But at least they should refund me the $$ on Cataclysm. right?

Anyways, I don't think I will ever start from lv0 and waste a month grinding way up to lv80 just to play Cataclysm. Once, I get my $$ back, I am done with WoW for good.

I buy stuff on my account (keys, items, etc) and send them to other b.net accounts all the time.

Confirm the reason for the ban (and that it is, in fact, one). If it's not, it could be part of their elevated security measures. Since he hasn't played in a while, and you're logging in, if your ISPs aren't in relative proximity it might trip some red flags for their system -- not that the account was sold, but that the account may not be under the control of the original owner (ie. hacked).

If it IS because you're using the account, then not sure what to tell you. They never publicly came out and said it was ok to start selling/trading/granting access to your account to others. It's kind of the equivalent of saying 'Well, it used to be illegal to smoke weed, but because I haven't seen or heard people getting arrested for doing so in a while, I'm gonna assume it's ok', then saying 'wow, I'm done smoking weed' after getting busted.

Odd, I've never had a problem with someone else using my account, or using a buddies. I'd see what they say is the reason. Did you change any of his account info, or just put in your CC for his monthly subscription? I'd also make sure it wasn't banned for someone hacking into it (been happening a lot this fall, more than normal). So I'd wait to see what they say before worrying.

But ya, if it's because of sharing an account, then you are out of luck.

Like an above poster said, confirm that the suspension was for account sharing; it really probably was just an automated flag on their side. If it was for that reason, have your friend tell them it was a Christmas gift that you were buying him Catclysm and game time. They shouldn't have any other reason to uphold the suspension, and it'll be playable again. You can always just buy game time cards from a retailer.

If they, for whatever reason, don't revert it, you're out of luck. Their ToS allows them no liability for these things, so they don't have to refund anything.

I gave my account to a friend for an entire year, and we had no troubles. Good luck.

thank you for all the great advice. I am pretty sure its automated flagged for some reason. but the only thing I did so far other than playing is updated subscription and purchased Cataclysm. Email and password are unchanged.

Even I knew its unlikely that Blizzard is trying to scam ppl off.. LOL but it sure look like it. I wonder what is their reaction if I ask them for a refund on the Cataclysm if they decided to suspend the account for good.

If your sharing an account and something goes wrong you are SOL. And they will not give you any refund on Cata .

I've been playing since day 1 and probably used more than 100+ accounts (friend accounts) and have shared mine so many times that I can't remember.

They don't care about that.. even tho they say they do

You won't get cought.. it's like impossible (unless some idiot reports you)

Blizzard is using this new system that if a unidentified IP uses the orginal owners account they do a temp. block on the account until the orginal owner resets the password and I play on my friends account and level some chars for him and I have no problems expect the temp block which is usally a one time thing.

Also this friend has paid for a name change for me on my account (when I played) with his credit card and I had no problems.
