First time SLI

Thread Starter
Hey folks,

Im looking to treat myself for christmas to an additional graphics card and run SLI for the first time.

Currently i have a Palit GTX 460 2gb and would like to get an additional card.

As i understand the cards need to be identical in order to run sli?
my question however is if picked up an additional Palit GTX 460 but a 768mb or 1gb version will this still work along side my 2gb with the same performance boost or must everything be like for like?

Also are there any other things i should be aware of, side notes, advice etc?

Many thanks!

I've never SLI'ed in my life before, and believe it or not, I'm planning my first SLI with my friend's card at this very moment

Still, I dont think it'd be a good idea. I'd use the identical model on SLI. I mean, a different brand with the same specs should do as well but 2 GB with a 768MB version? that doesnt make sense..

Still, just my 2 cents and dont take my word for certain.
Cheers!

Well if u do that it will only use as much memory as the lowest card has so that 2gigs will go to waste. Also when running sli say if ju do get anothber 2 gb card u will only have use of 2gb it does not add up to equal 4, so just some things to consider.

if you put a 1GB card and a 768Mb ccard in SLI, they will simply both run at 768MB. What SLI does is it mirrors the contents of the Video Memory across both cards, so if one card can store up to 768MB of memory, both cards will only store up to that much.

What you'll want to get is another (any brand is fine) GTX460 2GB card. That is all there is to it, really.
