i guess a windows VISTA cd could work, i heard ppl trying the repair on that disk and it worked (for them and there keyboard frown.gif)...funny thing is i pop in xp cd cant use keyboard so i dont see how it helped that person but who knows maybe vista cd has the stuff needed to make keyboard work...crappy part is i forget what windows it is, i know its vista, probly vista home...

is there stuff i can burn onto disc to tell me? like a program that auto runs ...test my hardware or something iunno...see what windows it has...

im waiting for the harddrive its at my friends work ...so i got no harddrive besides the exter drive i got right now that i was gonna load windows xp onto.(external through usb-always turns on when i plug it in to laptop)... then when i got other harddrive back i thought id be able to go back to normal...(vista, somehow get into bios iunno)

ahhh gosh i know im all over the place ill edit this a bit better im gonna go to best buy see how much the card stuff is... im running out of options

ill be around all day guys i could use some wise words..(except take it to acer cause i cant do that)

so .... that laptop card to usb didnt work...

cant get cd to load past this crap they tested my computer with...it says this without a harddrive in it...

for realtek ...pc1 fast ethernet controller....v 2.13...
media test failure, check cable..
exiting pxe rom.

next plan is to get harddrive back(its at my friends work), plug in... hope that msg goes away... im pretty sure guys at comp store made that msg come up...when i plug in NET it says
"""
it talks about client mac addR:.....GuiD:::
then under it says DHCP....../. ...
then says ::: no bootfile name recived exiting bla bla
"""
so im guessing that is just a test program they used? hope when i plug harddrive back in that goes away, all of it..!!!!!

im stummpedddd thought i could fix this thing....maybe it is garbage

reseat the internal keyboard and touchpad connectors

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/taking-apart-acer-aspire-5100-laptop/
keyboard is ony the bezel and 2 screws
touchpad connector will be tougher to get to

it that fails and usb keyboard/mouse dont work
the mobo is probably bad

call acer see if it is under warranty

i tried that...

to bad i cant use keyboard ... maybe a different keyboard would work? like a older usb keyboard?...

im really stuck now i got no idea seems like its time for some new parts...

man i thought i could fix this one...

comp itself is fine.... just cant use the damn keyboard ... iv been really wanting to see if i can use mouse, or even load this pcmcia card cd before it loads that stupid msg...

i can only get a xp cd to load .... the other cds load but dont come up like a xp cd will... to bad i cant get into bios, i couldnt find the battery on mother board so it must be sodderd in...

I'm having a hell of a hard time reading through your posts. Organize the OP with proper spelling, grammar, and formatting; list the problems and bullet out what you've tried.

Try an external USB keyboard; if everything on the motherboard is fine, preliminary drivers should load on boot and allow you to use it. The problem still isn't clear; if you can't load BIOS because of the keyboard, that's one problem; but if something is wrong with the BIOS itself is wrong, that's a bigger problem.

Getting Linux isn't really your fix right now, but here's a good read on it by our own lattyware.

Okay, so Im a bit confused here. The issue you are having is it once you are in Windows or when you are at the BIOS load screen. If you cant input frmo the keyboard from the BIOS load screen, then you have a bad system board, or less likely multiple bad keyboards. If its once you are in Windows, there are a couple possible causes. Proably cause one, corrupted HID drivers. Less likely is that there is a registry entry that is wrong. Ive seen systems where the mouse works but the keyboard not and if you press anything on the keyboard the mouse stops. Only way to resolve it is find the registry entry and change it with the onscreen keyboard. hopefully though your issue is the earlier issue, easily resolved by removing the device and drivers and then reinstalling them via updates or redetecting the hardware.

As for dual booting XP and Vista, there once were issues with that when Vista was released, but now its not really an issue and is relatively easy to do.

i have an acer aspire 5100 myself and as far as the cmos battery i think it is underneath the wifi card. i think the keyboards on these are natorious for going out as my keyboard is shot.. first i would try repeatedly pressing f2 even before it shows the boot screen to get into bios...it can be weird sometimes about getting into bios. as far as the pxe rom mesage goes that is just that laptop trying to boot from the LAN which makes me think somone has got it to go to bios cause that is disabled by default. if you still cant get the keyboard to work try reseating the keyboard connector as suggested earlier. if still no luck try leaving the keyboard disconnected and attaching an external keyboard that you have tested on another computer.hope this helps
